SOURCE: Rheem 50 Gal Hot Water Heater will not stay lit

On the back of the gas valve (where you turn the temp up) there is a stem that actually goes into the tank that senses the temprature of the water it could be dirty or buried in sediment depending on how old the tank is, or just bad. if the tank is over 10 years old i wouldn't bother replacing the gas valve, the tank is probably not far behind. A new valve will run around $100.00 maybe a little less. You wont find it at menards or home depot in stock but they may be able to order it for you. Menards sells rheem products or try you local plumbing supply house. REMEMBER TO RELIEVE THE PRESSURE ON THE TANK BEFORE YOU WORK ON IT. IF YOU CHANGE THE VALVE DRAIN IT FIRST!

SOURCE: Low amount of hot water

You say a very new water heater. You won't get 40 gallons of hot water from a 40 gallon water heater because the continuing influx of cold water will cool your hot water down. However, it appears that your bottom water heater element needs replacing. If the top element is bad, you'll get no hot water. If your bottom element is bad, you'll get "some" hot water. Try replacing the bottom element. DON'T FORGET to turn off the electricity AND water first (closeby towels are also handy)!

SOURCE: elec water heater no hot water

Check the breaker to see if the unit is getting power. You will need a voltage meter to check out the thermostat on the unit and also you will need to use it to check if the elements aren't blown. Sounds like the unit isn't getting power but could be the thermostat located under one of the panels on the side of the unit.

SOURCE: I painted the floor & my hot water heater (Reehm

The water heater is locked out. The following process should reset it.
1. Reapply power to the water heater and wait for 3 seconds for the system self-diagnostic check.
2. Within the first 30 seconds, the temperature dial must be rotated back and forth crossing the 120
degree mark at least six (6) times. This will reset the control and display a normal flash code
(slow blinking).

My hot water heater is leaking from the bottom

Well Faith, you're probably going to have to give us more info before we can get too exact, but I can tell you if it's leaking from the very bottom then you're going to wind up with a new heater soon. It's the only part of the heater that can't be repaired, plugged, welded, etc. When it starts leaking, that's the kiss of death.

Seems that the bottom is leaking. Water is hot. Should I replace the thermostat?

Leaking is not repairable, replace the unit, UNLESS the water is coming from an overflow or overheat circuit, in which case, lower the temp and test again.

Little amount of hot water

Quite likely a bad element. There are two in electric HW heaters. Often the bottom one will fail so you only end up with the upper half heated up.

You can check it with a digital volt meter if you have one.

with the power off at the breaker box, you can remove the wires from the element and (using the ohm (resistance) setting) check across the terminals. it should read around (4500W/240V = 18 ohms).

How old a HW heater? might be time to replace it...

Peace,

Pop off valve dripping Rheem 50 gal electric valve at bottom

If you are reffering to the drain valve at the bottom of the hot water tank. It may be leaking due to the O ring being cracked or worn out. You can either drain the tank and replace the valve or you can buy a hosebib brass cap and thread it on the existing valve. There is no cause for alarm when doing this as this valve is just to drain the tank when replacing your hot water heater
