Question about Whirlpool GSW9800PW Washer

Washer doesn't spin out

My washer will agitate, but not spin. I had read that the gear(s) between the motor and transmission may be broken. Having removed the motor, I find that the gear is loose on the shaft, but not broken or stripped. I expect to replace it, but think I may still have an issue. Ideas?

    No, the lid switch is fine. When fully assembled the motor hums, then cuts out when the lid is opened. Disassembled as it is now, I had to jump out the lid switch to see if the motor would turn - which it did.

    I think the most likely cause is electrical, not mechanical. I'd check the lid switch.

Whirlpool and Frigidaire top load washer sometimes have a problem with the lid switch / lid lock mech. Sometimes it's just a matter of screws backed out due to vibration, Whirlpool models from 2004, 5, 6.

The agitator works well during the wash cycle. When the drum spins, the agitator will not if the clothes touch the agitator. The water empties, but the agitator prevents the drum from spinning.


This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.

Basically whats happening is this.

When the washer goes into spin mode two plastic cams are forced together and raise a gear on the main agitator shaft that is supposed to keep the agitators from spinning. If the cams are worn (not necessarily broken) the gear doesn't lift high enough to completely disengage the agitators. We had the same problem. Ours was a major gear noise but a clicking could also be a symptom as well as the agitator keeping the drum from spinning. A set of Whirlpool Agitate Cams (part number 62580/01) cost about $15.00.

It's a bit messy to fix (15 oz. of 80-90 weight gear oil in the transmission available at auto parts stores) but very inexpensive.

In order to get the transmission out, you have to remove the cabinet, the fabric dispenser and both agitators.

The top agitator uses a plastic 1/2" drive bolt. A 1/2" socket extension works well.

You don't have to remove the drum.

Line up the transmission so that the release cam on the brake drum will snap onto the clutch spring retaining clip and put all parts back in the washer.

I'd also check the Motor Coupler (a $15.00 item that tends to wear) while you have the transmission out.


The basic tools are screwdriver, small socket set with up to a 1/2" socket, vice grips or good pliers (to remove and replace clips)

Ge frontload washer seems like it is not aggitating... what would be the problem???


Hello there:

The first thing to check when your GE washer is not agitating, is the belt. Let me tell you how to check the belt & the clutch with out having to take the washer apart.




The belt: Set the timer in the spin cycle and pull the timer knob to turn the washer on.
If the washer drains the water and then spins the way that it should, this tells you that the motor, belt & clutch are not the reason why your washer won't agitate.
A broken belt could be the reason your washer is not agitating or spinning.



The agitator: After making sure that the belt, motor & clutch are working ok, lets check the agitator.
The agitator uses a plastic agitator coupler that is couple to the transmission shaft by using splines cut in the coupler and on the transmission shaft.
Too much usage or overloading the washer too many times will wear the agitator coupler splines. With out the splines the coupler could not be coupled to the transmission shaft and that could be the cause why your washer is not agitating.




The clutch: A bad clutch could also be the reason the washer won't agitate or spin. Usually when the clutch is bad the washer will be noisy, like when you have bad brakes on your car.


The transmission: The transmission could be the reason your washer is not agitating. A common problem with the transmission is oil leaking right on top of the motor pulley and the belt.
As you can see, there could be different reasons why your GE washer is not agitating. You just need to keep checking each part until you find the problem and replace the part responsible.

If the cams are worn (not necessarily broken) the gear doesn't lift high enough to completely disengage the agitators (about 1/16"). We had the same problem. Ours was a major gear noise but a clicking could also be a symptom.

A set of Whirlpool Agitate Cams (part number 62580/01) cost about $15.00.

Washing machine operates sporadially


What made you replace the motor? Sounds also like a transmission problem. You motor reversing in spin but gears for agitate stripped in gearbox. Double check motor/coupling alignment. Pull the motor back off and turn the gearbox drive shaft both directions. One direction makes the basket turn, the other direction makes the agitator turn. If the agitator does not move, the gear case is bad.

I have a Kenmore 70 Series washer


This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.

Since it isn't agitating (I assume not at all rather than just the top part of the agitator. If just the top part isn't turning then the easiest solution is replacing the 4 "agitator dogs" ) the solution points to a couple of places.

1. The motor coupler may be broken.

This piece is a fail safe between the motor and transmission. and basically transmits power to the transmission.

Following is a description of how to remove the cabinet, pump, motor and motor plate to check the motor Coupler.

If it spins and drains OK, and if you can hear the motor turning, the problem points to the transmission.

Inside the transmission are a number of gears, springs, and plastic cams and levers. Over time one of them may have either broken or worn out.

There is a Whirlpool site with a parts list for their "commercial washer" which is essentially the same as for your washer. On it is a list of all of the components and parts for the washer.

By paging down to and following the diagram of the transmission you should be able to determine which actual part is broken.

If you've determined that the transmission is the problem, the solution points to either the Agitate Cams, Agitate Gear of the Agitate Gear Spring.

Pull the transmission.

Remove the clutch (the spring holding the clutch to the spin pinion is a bear to replace.

Remove the 8 transmission screws carefully, the transmission is full (16 oz.) of 80-90 weight oil.

Remove the transmission cover.

Pull off the spin pinion.

Push down on the agitate spring and remove the spring clip. Note where is attaches to the main shaft.

The two plastic agitate cam parts pull right off. Don't lose the washer on top of the cams.

Replace the cams, washer, spring and clip, pinion, oil (assuming you drained the oil first), cover and clutch parts.

Line up the transmission so that the release cam on the brake drum will snap onto the clutch spring retaining clip and put all parts back in the washer.

Washing machine does not spin unless I go in and start to turn the drumb. Lots of water on the floor.


Assuming that this is a top load, direct drive, neutral drain washer you appear to have two problems. No spin and a broken/leaking gasket or pump hose.

A good place to look at parts and diagrams of a basic Whirlpool washer (commercial model but consumer models are basically the same) is:

It's possible that

1. The motor coupling between the motor and transmission is worn enough that the motor cannot turn the transmission fast enough to begin the spin cycle.

2. You may have a problem with worn/broken cams in the neutral assembly. Those cams/gears etc. in that assembly keep the washer from spinning until all of the water is pumped out and then go into spin mode. Apparently, by opening and closing the lid, and giving it a minor hand spin, the cams and torque from the motor starting throws the cams into the right gears so that the washer will spin.

Inspecting the motor coupler only requires unplugging the, removing the cabinet, pump (two clips) and the motor (two screws and two clips). Since you will do this to check out the pump anyhow, that's a start.

Look at the coupler on the motor and transmission, If it's worn badly or broken replace it. Beyond that, if it appears to be the transmission, you'll have to remove the agitators (a 1/2" drive bolt under the cap for the top agitator and a bolt into the agitator shaft. Pulling the transmission and checking the cams requires a little basic mechanical knowledge.
Remove the clutch (one spring clip), the spin pinion, 8 bolts for the transmission cover (full of 16 Oz of 80-90 weight oil) and the clip that holds the main spin gear in place. Remove that and look at the neutral drain cams. On ours, the cam with a small spring didn't have one (it has broken off) sp the washer wouldn't go into spin mode unless we hand spun it to get it started or lifted and lowered the lid.

Replace the cams, put everything back and it should work.

The waste on the floor could be caused by a leaking pump, broken drain hose or the gasket at the base of the tub. Since you'll have mose of the washer apart anyway, these should be easy to check.

Clutch If your washer was made by GE®, it may use a clutch for agitating the clothes. As the clutch wears out, it may prevent the washer from agitating well or at all. If the clutch is worn, you need to replace it. For this job, you probably want to hire a qualified appliance repair technician.

Drive motor Many washer brands use a reversing motor. For agitation the motor runs in one direction, for spinning and draining, the other. It's possible for a motor to burn out in one direction and continue to operate in the other. If this happens, you need to replace the entire motor. 

Drive pulleys The motor or transmission drive pulley may be worn and unable to turn the drive belt. If so, replace the pulley.

Transmission The transmission could have either of these problems:

  • Older washers produced by Whirlpool® have a transmission with an electro-mechanical shifter. If the shifter becomes even partially defective, the unit may not agitate properly or at all.


  • The transmission may have a worn or broken gear, or some other internal problem.


If you suspect a transmission problem, you may have to call a qualified appliance repair technician to repair it.

Agitator The inside of the agitator--where the transmission shaft attaches--can become worn, and strip out the spline that allows the agitator to properly grip the shaft. Then the transmission shaft rotates back and forth as it should, but the agitator doesn't move properly. If this happens, you may need to replace the agitator and/or the transmission spline.

It's noisy Most noises from a washing machine occur during the spin cycle. If you hear loud thumping during the spin, the load of clothes may have become unbalanced. Stop the washer and redistribute the clothes, then re-start it. Repeat these steps if necessary.

Washer has a motor coupler linking motor to transmission. If this motor coupler is broken or has rounded out where it engages the motor and/or transmission gear it will only fill and drain. You can view this coupler by leaning washer back against the wall & looking underneath with a flashlight. There may be a sound dampener panel on the bottom that you have to remove to see it. It is two pieces of white plastic with a rubber grommet in the middle.
