Question about Dell Dimension 5100 (D51L1) PC Desktop

1 Answer

At bootup: "drive 1 not found;" neither CD or DVD drives work, although they start to run when I put in a disc, then stop.

When I boot up my computer, running Windows XP I get a message "drive 1 not found." I can hit F1 to get into windows, or F2 for setup. Neither of my drives, CD or DVD, are recognized.

Both my CD & DVD drives show up in setup, & each will spin up when I put a CD in, but then stop. I did try to resolve my problem by uninstalling (not physically) & then reinstalling each drive, but that didn't work either, & the MS help on my computer suggested my registry was corrupted.
This problem occurred immediately after I used a Kingston flash drive to back up Quicken. I also had used a program recommended by PC Magazine, Advanced System Care, which included a number of features dealing with the registry. And I did try System Restore, but there were no dates prior to my use of the System Care program.
I assume I can make the change in setup to avoid the computer trying to boot from drive 1, but the larger problem, of course, is the non-functionality of the drives.

When you boot go to your bios (probably f12) go to drives under there and see if your drive is present! if you have not changed any phiscal parameter on your computer it should be if it is not you may want to check the phisical cables in the computer to make sure they are attached and if so boot the computer with your hand on the drive do you feel it spinning up? is there a secondary drive present that has been added since the problem started? if so check the jumper settings on both (the drives should have a little picture that shows what for what) your main drive is primary and your second drive is secondary unless there older drives it may be labeled slave... let me know if it helped

ECS K8T890-A (V1.0A): (Conditionally) Refuses to let me boot from sata CD/DVD drive. How to fix/workaround?

this could be that your cd/dvd is not being recognised by the computer
Click start control panel administration tools computer management device manager scroll down cd-dvd rom drives you might see a yellow question /exclamation mark ? ! or a red X right click to update driver

you might have to physically unplug the leads for this cd/dvd restart your computer then plug them back this should activate the found new hardware wizard

if this does not fix the problem it might be a registry problem if you cant see your disk drive in windows explorer

Close all open programs

Click on Start, Run, and type regedit and press Enter
Click on the plus signs (+) next to the following folders

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

This folder is the DVD/CD-ROM Drive Class Description in the registry. Look for any of the following names in the right hand column.

Lower Filters

Upper Filters.bak

Lower Filters.bak

If any of the above keys shown in step 4 are listed, right-click on them and choose Delete

After deleting the keys, close the registry editor
Reboot your computer

Open My Computer and check to see if your CD or DVD drives have returned. You may also want to open Device Manager and verify that the yellow exclamation and error code on the CD or DVD drive is gone.

I have an Insignia d400a, given to me by my mother. I know it discontinued but i needed a pc so i wanted to wipe the hard drive with the dvd and Im having a really hard time. I reconfigured the BIoS to run...

It should be able to boot from the DVD or CD rom drives before checking the hard drive by default, but somebody could have changed bios settings which could cause it to not work. The factory (OEM) restore disk is DVD media, so you would need to use the DVD drive.

F2 during bootup to enter BIOS and check your boot sequence to make sure that the DVD drive comes before the hard drive. Also, the card reader on D400's tend to fail and no longer work, so it may be a good idea to dissable that from the boot sequence. The card reader can usually be found as a USB device in the boot sequence menu.

Windows 7 laptop won't boot to OS , only has a black screen with a blinking cursor

Insert your system recovery disc to repair your startup.

1. Change your Bios to boot from disc:
When your computer powers on, hit F2 (on some computers, F8 on others). Use your arrow keys and move to the right to your BOOT option. Hit the down arrow until you select your CD/DVD drive. Look at the bottom of your screen, and it should say to change the option hit F7 or F8. Use the specified keys, and move your CD/DVD drive above your hard-drive. Save your settings.

2. Boot from your disc. Insert your system recovery disc and restart your computer. Let the recovery disc load. If the option comes up to hit any button to boot from CD/DVD, then hit any button. Once it loads, it should come to a spot where it wants your language. Select your language, then select the option "Startup Repair". Click on it, and let it repair the startup. If it automatically starts correcting your startup then great! If not, then select your operating system from the list and click the Repair Startup option. Restart your computer, and hopefully it will boot from your hard-drive correctly.

Hope this works.

P.S. If it continues to boot from your recovery disc, then using the same method in step 1, go to your bios, and move your CD/DVD drive below your hard-drive.

How do I enable the drives on my Gateway 505GR?

Enter BIOS SETUP.
Change the "boot order" to put the CD/DVD drive as the _first_ boot-device.
Save/Exit, insert the CD-ROM containing the Operating System, and your computer should boot from the files on the CD-ROM.

My d600 will not bootup. i press f2 or it goes to a blank screen with a blinking line. what order do i put my boot order in so it will reboot

I usually put them in this order.
1. CD/DVD
2. Floppy Drive
3. Hard Drive
If your computer does not boot this way put the original operating disk in and try to boot from CD.
If your machine boots with the CD you can try to repair your operation system.

Laptop wont boot from cd/dvd drive, hard drive is cleasn, no viru

Hi usavahe.
Booting from CD should be possible.
1) When the laptop first starts to power up, repeatedly press the F12 key. This should bring you to a screen that lets you select the boot device.
2) For the Satellite, it may show icons across the bottom of the screen. You want the one that looks like a CD.
3) It should the start to boot from the Windows CD (if it is indeed a bootable disc) and you will see the message "press any key to boot from cd".
4) Press any key you want on the keyboard and the Windows CD installation process should begin

Hope that helps

Hi,

there are many reasons why, the computer would,nt find or see the Drive.
1:) the laptop drive, may need formatting.
2:) the drive, is not cabled correctly.
3:) the drive is faulty.

go into the bios setup, usually F2 Or esc Or Delete at setup. options sometimes appear briefly on screen. ** to enter setup press F2 Or similar**
find boot sequence or bootup order. and set the CD/DVD to become the first boot device.

Put your setup-install disk, in the dvd drive.
When rebooting the system, the computer will start a setup from CD/DVD. this will tell you that the drive is not found, or needs to be formatted. follow the on-screen options.

Finally, certain laptops only recognise, a drive of a certain size. install the original to see if this still works. Also check there are no limitation jumpers on the old-drive. ( small plastic bridging pins )
