It is the motor bearings. I have most taken apart but haven't figured how to get the motor out of the housing. Maybe I need to take the rear wheel drive out first.

yes , you have to take out the transmission[ 3 screws on the bottom], then 2 more at the front bottom of the motor, 2 more just underneath the carbon brushes. take out the motor..loosen the fan shaft by turning it clockwise. behind the fan there is 4 screws that you have to take out. Then you need circlip plier to take out the circlip that retains the front bearing[ replacement bearing 6200.] take out the carbon brushes and the little white nylon gear at the tranmission end of the motor. pull the armature towards the fan end, then you will need a bearing puller to take out the rear bearing [ replacement 608]..............hope you come right....

I want to make my Kirby shiney again

If your talking about detailing like a car, then just use wax brand called Mothers chrome, for all chrome and aluminum and use turtle was, McGuire s wax for painted parts. Make sure what ever wax you use, for painted part it says made for plastic if it is plastic you are waxing, if it is painted metal, you can use almost any eagle, turtle wax, mothers, the wax shop product. apply with damp wax applicator, let dry to light haze, wipe off to luster with a soft non lent terry cloth towel. All these products you can get at almost any major auto parts store, or auto section of any large main store, like walmart, shucks, auto zone, k-mart, Napa auto parts,,,, Etc.... Let me know by responding with comment and the 4 thumbs up, if this helped you. Thanks Mike, your fixya expert man,

Just purchased a used unit.

1. Did I get a good price? - YES
2. What would be considered "regular" maintenance on these units?
Replace belts every 1-1.5 years (they stretch over time), make sure brush roll bristles are not worn and stick out of the nozzle by about 1/8 of the inch (more info here). If bags starts stinking - wash it (more info HERE). Keep it clean and store unit with the nozzle raised off the floor (so bristles would not bend)
Other than that - nothing else is really important.

3. Are there any "Normal Problems" that I should be aware of?
If it makes strange crackling sound when you push it while it is OFF and in NEUTRAL - it may need new bracket cam (instructions HERE). Be careful - do not DROP it on the floor. Original G4 nozzle hooks (that hold nozzle to the unit) are britle and may break. STOP using it if it starts to work LOUD ( fan probably is broken)

4. Any advice for a new used Kerby G4 owner?
Go through the manual - ESPECIALLY section where brush roll installation is explained. We have some good pictures that you may find a bit better than in the OEM manual HERE.

Enjoy,
Rocky

Kirby g4 vaccum

please clarify what you mean?
Do you mean motor bearings or brush roll bearings?
brush roll bearings can be adjusted to lower the brush closer to the carpet when worn.
to do this remove the front brush assembly, there is usually a sticker below the belt hole showing RED = POSITION 1 HIGHEST (ie a new brush roll)
GREEN = POSITION 2 MIDDLE (brush part worn)
BLACK = POSITION 3 LOWEST (brush fully worn)
At each side of this there are 2 clips unlock these and remove the bottom cover.
Release the belt tension by rotating the belt release at the front.
Before removing the brush roll, at each end of the brush roll there is a grey plastic bearing carrier (Square at the ends) MARK this with a pen or marker just so you know the original position, also look closely for the coloured markings as indicated above or numbering 1,2 or 3.
If RED or "1" is showing you need to remove the brush roll by pulling it out and rotate the endcaps to Green or "2" and re-insert the brush roll, If Green or "2" is showing then rotate the endcaps to Black or "3" and re-insert.
If Black or "3" is showing then the brush roll is worn and cannot be adjusted any more, fit a new brush roll and insert with RED or "1" showing.
To re-attach the belt, move the belt to the middle of the roll and rotate the belt knob at the front ensuring the belt engages with the hook on the inside.

The bearings, there are 2 of them can be replaced. You will have to take the motor apart so you can get the armature out, one bearing is in the bearing plate, the other is on the end of the armature. If you do this, be sure to mark where each wire goes into the switch. If you mix up the 2 coming from the motor, it will run backwards.
