Question about Nikon N2000 35mm SLR Camera

Corroded batteries I haven't used my camera in years and found the batteries ate a hole through the bottom plate. I cleaned it up the best I can but now it will not turn on.

Use rubbing alcohol on the contacts and the solder joints. A few drops on every spot seen. Let dry over night & try the next day

First off, make sure that you're using good quality batteries, and not generic alkaline. Rechargeable NiMH are best. Next possibility is that not all of the batteries are making contact in the case. Make sure that the terminals at the bottom of the battery case haven't been bent low. If any of the batteries sit lower in the case than the others, try bending its bottom terminal up just a little bit so that it sits a little higher in the case, possibly improving its contact.

This is a 10 year old camera, and I haven't used it in a few years. I put in brand new batteries, turn it on, and I get the battery empty symbol.

Very good possibility that the batteries you took out were corroded and left a black residue on the contacts in the camera at least it has some power getting through to signal the low battery. The battery door will most likely be not to bad but take a light and look down inside and see what the others look like. Long cotton tipped swabs with alcohol on it is a good start, then what I use is a little bit of sand paper formed around the eraser end of a pencil to sand off the contacts be gentle you don't want to bend or displace them. Once clean use the swab on it again and try the batteries make sure the batteries are good first. Another thing you might have problems with is the internal battery, it's something like a watch battery it keeps the internal clock ticking so to speak.

Can't open battery compartment.

ashe 1977

there are two ways to fix this.
1- remove the bottom cover, take the rubber seal off from the battery compartment, remove the battery then soak the bottom cover in vinegar overnite. this will remove all corrosion. remove the battery cap and clean the threads. completely dry the cap and bottom cover, apply WD40 to battery cover threads. clean battery contact with pencil eraser ( carefully ). reinstall the rubber seal, replace bottom cover.------ best fix.

2- this may not work but it's worth a try. just apply ( carefully ) WD40 around battery cap and let it set for about an hour, re-apply and wait another half hour. If this doesn't work refer to # 1

My Minolta X-700 with new batteries is still dead

dcates
you will need a jewelers + type screwdriver. just turn screws to the left, remove the screws and bottom plate. push re-wind button in first. check the small white gear at the bottom of take up spool. if its broken it may be hard to replace as no new parts are available for this model.

Camera will not power on

It is possible that the batteries have corroded the camera's battery contacts or worse. Using a bright light, if necessary, closely examine the contacts where the batteries connect. If there is any sign of corrosion use an eraser to clean the contacts. A regular pencil eraser should work if it is light corrosion. Do not store batteries in anything for long periods. Beyond that I would send it back/take it back before the warranty expires.

Shutter release magnet faulty ( your camera is cocked but since you cannot release the shutter you cannot wind the film ). Remedy : open bottom cover by removing the two screws. You will see two small electro magnets one on the left hand side and the shutter release one on the right hand side ( it is the bigger one of the two ). The very thin wires from the magnet to the small circuit board on the right hand side may be broken : inspect and resolder 10 joints you see on the p.c. board. If no joy replace the s.r.magnet.

Battery corrosion

Carry on cleaning the contacts -perhaps a little abrasive cleaning with a pencil eraser- may do it.

My Nikon SB-600 speedlight seems to have died - only had it 2 years. Could it be because of battery leakage - I found some suspicious looking wet-stuff inside the case. Batteries haven't been there that...

You may be lucky because the battery acid may not have gone beyond the contacts in the battery chamber: open battery chamber and clean out especially at the bottom of the chamber and blow out any loose stuff when you finished cleaning ( use pencil erazor or something similar , but do not use sand paper or anything that will damage chrome plating of the contacts ; you do not want corrosion at later stage ).
