Have an Epson 9600, was getting an error code maintenance required 40, than had a paper jam over night and now when we restart printer head moves about an inch to two inched and we get service required code 00010004.
This error relates to the encoder strip for the carriage motor. The encoder strip is like a piece of graph paper and the head has an eye that reads how many lines it passes. This is so the machine know exactly where the head is at any point.
The error means that the machine is not correctly reading the encoder impulses. This could be because the encoder has broken, the eye has gone blind or a circuit board or cable has become faulty. It could be that if you have done maintenance that one of the connectors has been replaced with incorrect polarity.
Check the basics first:
Is the encoder attached and correctly routed through the optical sensor
Is the encoder strip clean - if there is a splodge on it, this will result in error
If you have done maintenance, check all the connections you made are good
If you need further help with this, there a good section in the service manual that gives a sequence of areas to test to pin down the fault. Get a manual from http://www.TheServiceManualShop.com
