Sounds like you may have water in your gasoline. Look in your gas tank on the mower with a flashlight or a pen light and see if there are bubble like globs at the bottom. Do the same with you gas can.
The best thing would be to get out the bad gas in the tank and put fresh gas in if that is the case.
The other thing you could do if you find you have water in it is to go dawn to the Auto or hardware store and buy a can of Heet or any other type of water remover. Try and run it and refill with fresh gasoline.

If the gas is good try and see if the spark plug cap is tight or even just take the plug out and give it a good look.
Another thing it could be is if your getting air in the gas line from a crack or if it is loose.

Snowblower was running for 1 hr. i shut it off when i restarted it ran 1 minute and stoped could not get it started, it it sat for 6 hrs. and started but would not run at higher rpms. it seemed to sputter

Hi. And welcome to FixYa. I am Kelly

From the symptoms you describe it sounds like the low oil sensor is shutting of the ignition.

i.e ran for 1 hour... hot oil... / low oil level ignition cut off. Sat for 6 hours all oil now in crankcase... started and higher rpm sputters....

Check the oil level. Other than that I think everything is fine.

If not please respond with a "make and model" of your snowblower. After that, there is more that we can do to resolve the problem.

Thanks for using FixYa!

Shuts off after running a while

Given the fact that you offer absolutely NO information about what "IT" is, I am going to guess at a solution for you.
I am assuming that you have a one cylinder Briggs and Stratton engine mounted in a riding lawn mower that sounds like you are dealing with a defective ignition armature, commonly know as the coil.
You can verify this by obtaining an in-line spark tester, the kind with a neon bulb that will show a visible spark while the engine is running,
Insert your tester in the spark plug wire and connect it to the spark plug, start the engine and run it until it "shuts off". Immediately try to restart it while watching the spark tester for a visible sign of spark. If you see no light flash or a very weak looking light in the tester, replace the ignition armature/coil.

Mower sputtering and getting hot

To help stop the sputtering you will need to tune up your mower. As for it getting hot check the air filter, and the top air draw area to ensure that they are clean. During your tune up be sure to replace the oil, spark plug, and fuel filter. If your air filter is dirty replace it too.

Sputtering Mower

It might not be disengaging the mower deck all the way off. I had this problem on an older model.
