Scan failure The printer will print any document from the computer, will print photos, but will not copy from an original placed on the glass. It gives the error message, Scan failure. The power is there. I checked all the wires and it has power. What is the problem? I have had this printed for one year. [email protected]

When the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) to copy I

There are two scan modes when copies are made. When you make copies through ADF you originals go past small **** glass located to the left of the main exposure glass.Any small mark on this **** glass( correction fluid mark, ink mark, small scratch, dust particle and so on)will show as a line on your copy.So to get rid of these vertical lines on your copies you need to clean this small exposure glass.

HP OfficeJet J5780 Vertical Black Line Prints when copying or scaning only. Cleaned rollers and changed black ink cartrigde. Still problem.

Have you tried cleaning the document feeders Scan Glass? (small glass under doc feeder ~ 1" by 9") Most times there is dirt spot on this glass, causing a shadow on scans and copies.
Try copying from the large glass by lifting doc feeder / platen cover and manually placing original. If no line copying or scanning manually from large glass, then small scan glass is deffenitely the culprit. Hope this helps.

When faxing does paper face uup or down

You load the originals print side uo on the document feeder tray or print side down on the glass.
To send a single page fax you can either load the original on document feeder tray or on the glass; to send a multi-page fax you must use the document feeder tray.

The position of the paper is the same either you copy, fax or scan.
All this is clearly explained in the user's manual, that you should read and you can download from HP support pages for you printer:

How to print a regular document from Microsoft Word, Excel.

Instead of pressing the start button to print, you need to press the small ON/OFF button. The start button works to copy/scan. But to print, you will need to turn the printer on first. Once the printer is on, the computer should recognize it fine and allow you to print from your applications.

Stripes on scanned photo

Do copies come out the same? How about when you print? If you get the stripes whenever the printer prints from the computer or copies, then you probably have a bad ink cartridge. If you get it only when you make copies or scan, then check for dirt on the scan glass. Clean it anyway with some commercial glass cleaner. See if that works.

Printer/Scanner Problems

Does the line show up on PRINTS FROM YOUR COMPUTER also, or only when SCANNING A DOCUMENT? If the line is only from scanned documents, the SCAN GLASS has something stuck on it. The SCAN GLASS is a GLASS **** located under the ORIGINAL FEEDER. It is NOT the plate of glass you place the original on . Look UNDER the original feeder for a scrap of paper stuck in the optical path of the GLASS ****, and remove the scrap, or CLEAN THE SCAN GLASS IF CORRECTION FLUID, INK, ETC ARE STUCK ON IT. If the line shows up on ALL prints, your CHARGE CLEANING SLIDER located in the IMAGING (DRUM) UNIT must be slid all the way to one end of the charger, OR IT WILL CAUSE A BLACK LINE ON ALL PRINTS. Otherwise, the IMAGING UNIT may need to be cleaned or replaced. Toner smudges on the drum would indicate need for cleaning or replacement.
