My laptop is making a loud noise

I have an IBM thinkpad T40, works great, but has recently begun to make a large whirring sound at start up and then again after short term use. It does not shut down, nor act improperly.

No, there is no cd in the unit. I think it is the fan, but have no idea to find out if it is or not. It gets louder after short usage and seems better if I run an external fan on it.

Hi again.
It sounds to me that the PC is overheating, get a can of compressed air and give short blasts through the air vents and the CPU fan (located underneath the laptop) once your happy that all the dust has been blown out restart the PC and it should be quieter from then on.

Good luck and thanks for using FixYa!!

Ok sound like to me, a cd has been left in the laptop. check the cd drive, take out the cd. reboot the system and see if it continues. If you leave a CD in the drive, when the laptop is boot it will spin up the CDROM looking for any type of boot setup, as if installing windows or something. comment back with the results.

If this fixs the issue please rate my solution.

T40 2373 no wireless connection

Hi it sounds like your driver is missing or corrupt , this may be the case if u have recently installed windows, go to control panel click on sytem icon then click on device manager button under the hardware tab, have a look then under network adapters to see if there is a yellow warning icon if so make a note of the name and you should be able to download the driver from this location. its near the bottom under networking wireless.

Sounds like a non-IBM network card is installed. Remove the card and reboot your laptop.

When i switch on the my thinkpad it starts to boot up then the screen goes blank the battery light goes orange and and flashes and it makes a cranking noise.

Is the Battery making the cranking noise? If so the battery is telling you the battery is dying. I have a IBM ThinkPad 380Z and when on the charger it makes a beeeeep noise and goes off and on for almost the entire day and then stops and keeps a solid orange battery light on.
Try booting without battery
