Got an old dell latitude cpi D300XT laptop I want to get the photos and files off it. The problem is that it won't stay on for long..the power lights lights up for a few secs then goes off!

Can anyone advise on the best course of action please?
I have thought about taking the hard drive out and putting it it my acer laptop, but i don't know if this would work and also I wouldn't know how to go about it,
Grateful for any advice,x

If your trying to use the operating system from Dell 2200 in your Compaq... your going to have driver issues and Windows liscense issues... it may not let you boot into the operating system seeing that how Microsoft builds the copy protection by building in the hardware where Windows was first activated into the encrption for the copy protection. That being said... If you want to erase the drive and install it as a new drive into the compaq and then put a Operating System on it from there... you can do that.

The Bottom line is yes you can use your Dell Hard Drive in your Compaq as long as you Erase it and Reinstall a Operating System on it once you get it in the Compaq.

Hope this Helps!

NO. The 2200 uses IDE and the NX uses SATA. Besides unless you're running Vista it wouldn't work anyways.

Give me the whole story with details and I'll tell you how to fix it.

Is it a Windows password or a power on / bios password?

What the guy below is correct but ONLY if the newer laptop uses the same connection, IDE. The answer is still NO, unless it's Vista like I said earlier.

I usually use a professional password changing program, but it's expensive so here are your alternatives. (borrowed from another fixya user).

Forgetting your Windows administrator login password. With no way to
get into the system, you can’t even perform basic maintenance, let
alone a thorough tune-up. Formatting is always an option, but we
consider that a last resort. (Plus, guess who’s going to have to help
reinstall all the programs lost after a wipe?) But all hope is not
lost. There are a few ways to actually retrieve a lost Windows account
password. Read on, and we’ll show you the light.

    1st Method:

The first thing which you check if you forget login password. When we
install Windows, it automatically creates an account "Administrator"
and sets its password to blank. So if you have forget your user account
    password then try this:

Start system and when you see Windows Welcome screen / Login screen,
press ctrl+alt+del keys twice and it'll show Classic Login box. Now
type "Administrator" (without quotes) in Username and leave Password
field blank. Now press Enter and you should be able to log in Windows.

Now you can reset your account password from "Control Panel -> User Accounts".

Same thing can be done using Safe Mode. In Safe Mode Windows will show this in-built Administrator account in Login screen.

    2th Method:

There are a lot of Windows password revealers and crackers available,
but I’ve found that Windows Password Recovery Tool is the most
    effective.:
    it
not only supports XP, 2000, and NT, I have personally tested it with
Vista Home Premium and Ultimate. It works perfectly to reset any local
user account to a blank password

You can use the ISO to burn a boot CD. Follow these instructions:

    1. Download ISO file from Windows Password Recovery Tool(http://www.windowspasswordsrecovery.com)
    2. Burn to a CD using a CD burning tool such as Nero or Roxio or MagicISO
    3. Insert CD into drive and reboot.
    4. You may have to select an option in the BIOS to get the computer to boot from the CD.

Booting up and clearing a password takes a minute or two works like a charm.

Your hard drive's Master Boot Record might be the problem. If it was corrupted then the bios will not see a bootable hard drive.

Three things you have to do in order to solve this.

1. purchase a 2.5" external enclosure, remove the hard drive and put it in there.
2. purchase another 2.5" hard drive for the laptop and reinstall Windows.
3. once the reinstall is done, plug the enclosure into the laptop by the usb cable and copy your data to the new hard drive.

How do I remove a Compaq Presario 2200 forgotten drivelock password

If you forgot the password of the hard drive I'm afraid there is no way to access the drive any more. This password is used to encrypt the hard drive entirely, and without this key there is no way to decrypt the files or access the drive.

What is the largest drive I should put in my Compaq Presario 2200 PC Notebook?

Usually the drive which can be put in your machine depends on what you want to use the machine for. But usually to attain optimum performance it is advisable to put in a hard disk in accordance to the RAM on your system. The ration of RAM to hard drive should be about 1 Gig Ram to 100Gig Hard drive. This should help you decide what size of drive to put.
Hope this solution has been helpful?

COMPAQ NX6120 POWER ON PASSWPRD

Hi Joseph,

I can’t take my nx6120 apart (disconnect the battery would have been all) as the buggers have used some screws ordinary people haven’t got the screwdriver for, but there are other ways
On the other hand, after spending about 3 hours on the internet, it might be the easiest way.
MAKE a screwdriver that fit the silly screws (remove the main battery first), remove the back cover, find the backup battery (probably a small button battery), take it out for a few seconds, back in again, and you are done. Reassemble, plug in the main battery and you are up and running.
If you don’t want to take your pc apart, then there is only the hard way, Backdoor-password
And as I don’t know (cant find it anywhere) the type of BIOS for this nx6120, youll have to try them out, one by one:
For Award BIOS:
AWARD_SW
j262
HLT
SER
SKY_FOX
BIOSTAR
ALFAROME
Lkwpeter
j256
AWARD?SW
LKWPETER
syxz
ALLy
589589
589721
awkward
CONCAT
d8on
CONDO
j64
szyx

For AMI BIOS passwords:
AMI
BIOS
PASSWORD
HEWITT RAND
AMI?SW
AMI_SW
LKWPETER
A.M.I.
CONDO

For PHOENIX BIOS’ try this backdoor password:

Hard drive failure compaq presario 2200

If the bios is showing no ide, means that your ide hard drive is not being detected.
This can be caused by some motherboard failure, some bad cable connection or caddie connection or bad hard drive.
