Re: Map fro Garmin
As far as I know you can only buy maps from Garmin, or a Garmin retailer. The 660 should have all the maps for North America already loaded in it.
You can purchase Points of Interest (POI) databases from a variety of sources. Just google POI. These are not maps but they are adresses for points of interest such as restaurants, special services, and even speed trap cameras.

Make sure your City Navigator map is enabled.
To check your map, press the wrench/tools button, then the map icon and then
press "map info".
You should see your map listed with a box next to it.
This boxed should be checked. If it's not, then your map is turned off. Press
the box and to place a checkmark in the box. This will turn your map back on.
If you want to test the maps on your new Garmin you can do one of two things. Either you can copy the maps onto an SD card and then insert the card into your GPS. You can also connect the GPS to your computer with the USB cable that was supplied with you unit. Using whatever file manager you normally use with your version of Windows (Windows Explorer, Total Commander, etc), you will be able to see your Garmin GPS as another drive on your system. You can then copy your City Select maps over to your Garmin.
Once you have the maps either directly on your Garmin GPS or on a microSD card, you have to choose to use those maps. From the main screen of your GPS choose Tools>Settings>Map. If your City Select maps are compatible with your GPS they will show up in the list of maps. To make use of the map just choose it by touching the name of the map. Your Garmin will then load that map and display it. If your City Select maps do not show up in the list, or if you choose them and they do not load or give you an error then they are not compatible with your 1490T.

You can zoom the map out and then use your finger to navigate the map to France. When you are hovering over France zoom into a city and see if there is any detailed coverage.
You can also go into the "Where to?" menu and select A point of interest category. Then click the near button at the bottom of the screen and choose a location in France. Then complete the search and you should see POI's for that area.
No. When you plug in the SD card, the Nuvi will load the map from your SD card. Once you get to the main menu, select the wrench symbol, then the map symbol and then "map info". You should see both the US and Europe map. Make sure the Europe map is checked. You can uncheck the US map. This is how you switch between maps. The reason why you have to have the extra map on the SD card is because the Nuvi can only have one map on it's internal drive, one at a time.
Firs of all I hope you are using Garmin Map Updates for 2009, not 2008. It sounds like there is a connection issue. Make sure you can go into the drive on your computer and see the device as well as access files within it. If that is all fine: I have not seen a troubleshooting section yet unfortunately with Garmin for this map update (came out about 3 weeks ago) so i would try the ones for the older versions, should be the same.
