Question about Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1: Windows

Unable to ping my ISP gateway

I am using two Windows OS using dual boot. 1st I had Windows XP and my latest addition is Windows Vista Home Premium. However I am stuck up with a weird problem for network connectivity. I have
configured network settings of Vista exactly same as my XP, however I am
unable to ping my ISP's gateway from Vista. The same is working perfectly
from XP. I disabled Firewalls of Vista, but no result.
I do have MacAfee 8.5ii AV on both the OS and have allowed all default configurations on both them. Infact I disabled it on Vista. Can anyone help me in zeroing on the issue?

I'm not at home, but I guess it showed a globe. If not than I'll let you know here.

My vista shows 2 monitors icon in the notifcation area. And when I disabled the win firewall, ping replies changed to destination host not rechable. I've installed all the drivers from Vista drivers CD that I got with this machine and I don't doubt it, as it worked fine 2 months back. Still not resolved.

Do you have an active network connection in Vista? Does the network icon in the notifcation area display a globe or just 2 screen

This could be an issue having to do with the installed drivers for your network adapter. XP and Vista use different drivers, even though the hardware is the same...Take a look through this tutorial and make sure all your network hardware has vista drivers installed. Also possibly helpful would be a read through of this vista help site...
I would start there, and if you need further assistance after making sure you have the correct drivers for vista, write back and we'll be happy to help you sort it out...

I hope this information allows you to resolve this issue. If you need further assistance, please post back with a comment to this thread.
If I've managed to answer your question or solve a problem, please take just a moment to rate this post....thanks!

To turn Ping On in Vista:

Go to "Control Panel" -> "Administrative Tools" -> "Local Security Policy":

"Windows Firewall with Advanced Security" -> "Windows Firewall with Advanced Security - Local Group Policy Object":

Under Overview, select "Windows Firewall Properties":

On "Private Profile" tab and under State -> Inbound connections:

    change Not configured to Allow,

If you've set that, are you getting any event logs that point to the problem?
See here and here links to advanced network troubleshooting...
Check also the network discovery settings in vista.

How do I setup a dual boot for a PC with Vista and XP? I want XP to start automatically. My laptop is a Toshiba Satellite L355-S7915 that had Vista Home Basic preinstalled.

The first thing you need to do is repartition the hard drive. This will effectively erase the drive because partitions run below the OS level.

You create two partitions and then you can load each OS to its own partition. When the box boots you choose the OS you want to start and thats it...I think if you put the preferred OS in the first partition it will load that one by default.

You need both OS disks to do this so make sure your factory Vista disk works.
