SOURCE: dryer wont spin

If dryer does not spin it is usually a problem with the belt or the motor. Check also door switch.

See also following indications from Repairclinic:

It won't tumble If your dryer doesn't tumble, check these:

Belt
Motor
Door switch
Belt Dryers have a drive belt that turns the clothes drum. If the belt breaks, the drum stops rotating. Then you need to replace the belt, and often the idler pulley, because the pulley tends to wear out at the same time.

Click here for a belt installation diagram.

Motor If the dryer motor only hums when you press the Start button, the motor may be burned out. Here's how to test the dryer motor:

  • Remove the belt.

  • Check for obstructions in the blower fan housing.

  • Manually rotate the shaft of the motor.

If the motor is very stiff, or impossible to rotate manually, and the blower fan housing is clear, you need to replace the motor.

If the motor rotates freely, run the motor momentarily with the belt removed and the blower in place. If the motor runs fine with the belt removed, there may be a problem with the idler pulley or the clothes drum. Try to rotate the drum by hand. If it is very difficult to move, correct any problem with the rollers or pulley, and then reassemble the dryer and try it again.

If the motor hums but doesn't rotate on its own even with the belt removed--yet you can turn it freely by hand--you usually need to replace the motor or the motor start capacitor.

Door switch Your dryer can't operate at all if the door switch is defective. It's inside the dryer main housing near the door frame. Sometimes you need to raise or open the top or front of the dryer to reach the switch. If it's defective, you need to replace it.

The following link explains the dryer no heat problem:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r630242-dryer_runs_but_not_heat

Make sure you perform all component checks with the dryer UNPLUGGED. Dangerous voltages are still present inside a dryer even with the unit turned off.

Pay particular attention to the paragraph that discusses proper dryer ventilation. Most dryer heat related problems are attributed to poor ventilation that leads to dryer overheating to the point of failure. If you can't remember the last time you had your ventilation checked or cleaned, I would recommend you do so before replacing any failed components. Failure to do so may result in undesired drying results and premature failure of any components you have replaced.

The most common cause of dryer heat failure is a blown thermal cut-out (TCO). This component acts as a fuse and will blow when an overheat condition occurs. If it is determined that the TCO is bad, it is strongly recommended that you replace the hi-limit thermostat at the same time. Failure to do so may result in premature failure of replaced components. In many cases, the manufacturer sells these parts as a set (more cost effective to purchase this way, too). Both these components are located on the heater box adjacent to the heating element.

To access, remove the lower panel under the dryer door. This is accomplished by inserting a putty knife along the seam at the top of the panel about two inches in from each side. There is a retaining clip that needs to be depressed to release the panel. With the panel removed, the heating circuits are located on the right hand side under the drum. You can view drawings of your dryer at searspartsdirect.com by entering your model number. Use model number "110.66912690" for your search criteria. The heating circuits are listed under the "Bulkhead" heading. The heating element is listed as item number 14. The thermal cut-out is listed as item 47 and the hi-limit thermostat is item 48. NOTE: You can find the TCO and hi-limit thermostat sold as a set at appliancepartspros.com as part number AP3094224 (Your Kenmore dryer is manufactured by Whirlpool). This could save you some $ if one of these components is your problem.

If you have questions along the way, or require additional assistance, please let me know. I hope this helps you.

Hello Friend, Your problem is very simple to fix. You need a thermal fuse, very simple and affordable to replace. To replace the thermal fuse just remove back cover of dryer and look down where the air blows out. Now, just to the left where all the wires are you will see a white plastic part with two wires plugged into it. This part is called a thermal fuse. Just remove these wires and replace the thermal fuse. Your dryer will run like new. Happy to help, Tim.

I have a kenmore dryer model 8904 and it runs fine but it wont heat up

These are several things that can cause this, I will list them in order of "most common" to "least common."
1) Most common: The heat element has failed, they break in two pieces, and must be replaced.
2) One of the thermostats or a fuse has failed, and must be replaced. If this is the problem, you must also clean the whole inside of the machine's ductwork of lint, or having replaced the part, it will fail again.
3) A wire has burned in two, often near the heating element. Rarely, it can also be near the electrical cord in the back of the machine.
Be blessed.
