Question about Gateway M320CS Notebook

1 Answer

Broken USB ports

This was not due to a storm or power outage like many others I have read about. My computer is three years old, it is a Gateway GT5028 and has seven USB ports. All of which are no longer to register: digital camera, printer, external harddrive, iPod, so on. BUT the speakers that came with the computer are still up and running fine. [knock on wood]
I have tried these few solutions:
Uninstalling and Reinstalling the drivers
The PC has been shut down and turned on many times [this matter has been since one month ago]
All of the instructions from the Microsoft Solutions page
System Restore
My warranty is expired
My device manager detects no problems/changes/updates
The local PC shop is $50 an hour
So, any other suggestions on how to fix this incredibly odd problem, let me know.
My next step is to re-format my harddrive myself and see if maybe it will bring them back.

I checked my BIOS settings I just don't know if I need to update them or not and I really don't want to screw up my motherboard. But I wrote down all the stats and I am trying to research if they are all the way they should be. So, everything under 'integrate peripherals' seems fine. I don't know what to do next? I didn't think I was running Linux on my pc?

Thank you for the suggestions, its just that I have no clue where to begin implementing that process. You wouldn't have a how to link or something, would you?

I spoke to someone about installing Ubuntu and I attempted the download but it said it was 8.5 hours until done. So I canceled. The computer programmer I talked to said I probably should't mess with it if it takes that long. But there has been a breakthrough in my problem! I small one anyway, I connected my external hard drive and the blue light on it turned on and it's disk started running. But the computer isn't registering that it is hooked up. So, I hope that this means some form of software problem versus something extremely difficulut/irreversable/expensive. Any suggesting after reading this?

Here's what I'd do:

Check your bios settings

Run a Live Linux cd lik Ubuntu or Knoppix

Update bios firmware

If you try all three and you get the same results then the problem is definitely hardware related.

If it was hardware related then I'd try removing all the pci cards hooked into the motherboard / clear cmos.

If it's software related then back up your files and reinstall the operating system.

Let me know if you need any additional details. I respond to my requests.

Best of luck!

I suggested Ubuntu and Knoppix so that you could just boot to a linux system with the disc. If you boot one it won't affect or modify your current setup. The computer will use the disc like a hard drive. That way you'll know whether it's a software problem or not. If the usb works under a LIVE cd then it's the software, NOT the hardware or vice-versa.

It's just an easy way of elimating possiblities.

Just poke around. It's one of the easiest Linux versions to use. All the info you need is on that page.

Find a friend that has a fast internet connection and download Ubuntu. It's going to eliminate all the guessing and hours and hours of trying this and that.

Trust me, it's worth the pain.

Hd tv USB port doesn't work since lightening storm. Is this fixable?

Just about anything is fixable. The issue is whether the cost of repairs and the time without the unit awaiting repairs is worth the effort. If the set is more than two years old, I would recommend looking for a new set. I say this because the average life expectancy of modern TVs is three years before major repairs are needed. Manufacturers plan this in order to keep selling units. If you want your devices to last longer, invest in an UPS to protect your equipment. Surge suppressors help, but are not really enough.

Copier will not turn on....had a storm and power outage earlier this week. Brother MFC-6490CW.

Seems the is an internal problem due to overvoltage. This could be caused due lightning.
If you are lucky only an internal fuse is blown. Else the power supply is gone ... In the worst case also other electronic parts are damaged.

I have a Logitech Z-5 Speakers which connect to my laptop by usb. the light doesn't come on on the speaker.. looks like the usb wire isn't working or a fuse has blown due to a power outage. what do you...

Did you try using a different USB port.
If there is any short of the cable then on PC there should be a massage like "Power Surge of USB port", if you don't receive this massage then probably something wrong inside the speaker.

Had a power outage and USB ports on side of monitor do not function now. I had it plugged into surge protector. Any suggestions?

The usb ports are powered using a fuse in series of approx 500-750 ma to avoid damage due to short circuit, check for the blow fuse that is in the path of usb ports.

Mines, two or three years old and doing the exact same thing, you ever figure out what happen or how to fix it? I took the battery out and it reads 16 volts. I put a 2 amp load (fan) on it and it pulls fine, so I'm reluctant to buy a new battery pack for it now.

2 of 4 USB Ports Not Functioning

Most likely a motherboard problem, though you can try and re-do windows, best bet on getting it all to work is Turn off CPU, Unplug Power cable, And all usb devices, let it sit for about 20mins. Plug it all back in. Turn on the CPU! Though this might really get on your nerves having to do this multiple times, id get a new motherboard.
