Tiller has been sitting up for some time and now won't engage into forward or reverse.

Hello. make sure all of your clevis pins are in place. And on mine even if i get it in gear...make sure that the "dead man" is cable connected for sure. Make sure when you squeeze the "safety stop" or "Run/engage" lever that it is actually moving a lever at the other end. If so? Then trans box is next to inspect. But that would have had to suffer a hard jam to damage that. And again with other people I've seen this a hundred times with rear tine tillers. Sometimes it just "cogs out" into a state of "bad mesh" with the gears and all that is needed is to push or pull the tiller a bit while you try to engage the shifter. The wheels just have to be rolled a tiny but and you'll free up the meshed gears. Happy tilling. Four thumbs up will truly be appreciated. Thanks. Joe

My tiller does not seem to be cutting deep enough

Hi there kimberly,

Here's what you need to do.
  • Make sure the depth stake (behind the tines) is up as high as it will go. This will allow the tines to go deeper.
  • Fire it up. Set the tine rotation to reverse (more mixing and twisting.
  • Make sure the tines are actually turning, Each side is held in place with a shear pin. In case something binds the blades, this pin breaking will save the drive train
  • Note how the tiller is balanced. Wheels in the middle. You can tilt it forwards or backwards.
  • Tilting forward allows the wheels to gain traction and move the unit forward
  • Tilting Backwards allows the tines to dig in. If the surface is too hard, Press down with your body weight. It will dig through.

I hope this work out for ya

Best regards
Mike

When going forward the tines are going in reverse

I've never seen one of these so excuse my ignorance. Is it possible that the cable to change from forward to reverse is out of adjustment? Can you go to where the cable attaches to the shifting mechanism, detach it and manually try to change from reverse to forward? Hope this helps. Good luck!

Check under the metal or plastic cover just behind the engine. This covers the forward and reverse belts. Your belt either broke, jumped off fthe pulley, or needs a tension adjustment.

Tiller will not till in forward motion.

sounds like your drive belt is worn or the handle bar adjustment is too tall and your handle is not adjusted.

Tiller tines run wrong way.

DEpending on the machine you can take the tines off and turn it around. The only other thing to do is get into the tranny and see why it is going into reverse gear and not forward operating. This sounds like it is a trans problem so even switching the tines around will help it will not solve the problem until it is looked at
