I have a HP Pavilion 8766C which originaly came with Windows Me and I had Windows 98 put on it. I was used to using 98. Now giving this Computer to my daughter wiped and info 98 off and OS went back to Win/Me. Me was working started up and all. I then Sandisked and tried to defrag but OS said the drive was locked. So I am trying to upgrade with XP reinstallation disc and its saying Disk I/O error REplace the disk, and then press any key it has a black screen. What do I do now.

You haven't mentioned whether you are trying to repair it or just reformat and install OS etc. Schematics are not available or even if they are, repairs are not worth the effort as you'll no longer find parts for it.
However you can still get drivers and updates for it.
I've searched a bit and found the HP care website where you can download drivers, firmware and manuals.
While you may disagree, I don't think it would be worthwhile to invest any time& money in looking for processors, memory etc as it is now a very old system and practically as powerful as a mobile phone or even less.
To change the operating systems say from Windows XP to Windows Vista or Windows 7 you need to purchase Windows upgrade disk or a full version of the Windows installation disk. You boot up with this Windows installation CD to install the new operating system and follow the screen instructions.
Are you trying to set up a raid configuration? If not I would reformat using the 98 disk and reinstall. (You may be able to skip installing 98, try installing xp first and it should ask for the disk containing the software (win98) that qualifies for the upgrade.
its domnickr, its so we can not install xp in model 1255 it will spoils your hard disk all you can install win98 ED 2 only..... so its wise not to try it and reinstall using win 98 install disk. if format is not possible do format using Fdisk command. step 1 :enter dos floppy restart ur lap enter from insulation option. chance boot perority to floppy disk ie Shift +. restart lap enter fdisk in commant format using instruction for any help mail at email@example.com
Instead of upgrading, do a full installation of XP. You will be prompted to either keep your old system or remove it. Choose to remove it. That will solve your problem. Don't forget to rate this answer
if the windows xp isn't an upgrade from 98 then it will install on your computer over the 98 without problem, bearing in mind that all information on the disk will be lost once you format it with the disk, but if it's an upgrade disk you might have to check with your friends to see if they have the same version of 98, the other thing if the computer came with 98 installed the product key should be on the case on the back or the side is normal postioning for this altho some techs use to put in the inside of the case.
hope this helps.
