Hook up an external usb keyboard.

If that works then go into the device manager and remove both the keyboard and mouse.

You might want to try a bios / firmware upgrade too. If that doesn't work then it's probably a hardware issue. It's a pretty common problem with many of the Toshiba laptops.

The keyboard of mit toshiba tecra M4 doesn't Work. Sometimes this problem disapears after restarting the PC. I think it must be a software problem , because the tablet buttons didn't work too .

Hello,

Thank you for using fixya.

You are right that there's a problem with the software of your computer. It lacks the driver. You can download the driver from the website of toshiba. The driver that you need is the keyboard driver or the synaptics driver. I am providing you with a link to the site.

Click here: http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/support/jsp/home.jsp

Once you are there, click on download and put in the correct information that it needs so that you can get the list of drivers which are compatible for your computer.

I hope this helps.

Total loss of toshiba tecra keyboard after start up. It functions OK during start up to type in password but then there is total drop out. No key strike has any effect at all. Mouse and touch pad all fine.

maybe you keyboard has failed? although it is strange you can type in to logon? Anyway, above is a service and repair manual, this has troubleshooting steps to take to effect a remedy. Try Booting up in Safe mode desktop, SMDT, and see if it is a program conflict. If it work in SMDT mode, then you have some program conflicy. You will need in that case to use START>>RUN>>msconfig.exe, (enter) and disable programs in your startup folder, and find out which one is causing the problem.

System boots to the paasword area then the keyboard and curser freezes up can not put in password.

Sounds like a mouse driver error. Try unplugging the mouse and booting with only the keyboard connected. Once you've typed in your password and logged-in you will need to 1) delete the existing mouse driver and 2) plug your mouse in and let Windows discover the new hardware. Use the recommended driver and reboot your system after it's finished installing.

Good Luck!
