Question about Sony Playstation 3 (PS3) Console

1 Answer

Cascading white craziness

I have my PS3 hooked up to my insignia 26 inch flat screen hdtv via hdmi cable. it worked fine yesterday but when i went to turn it back on after work, the tv said no signal then froze up completely and started slowly turning bright white from the outside edge in. my bose dvd player works fine and i dont have any other hdmi things to test out the tv. i did take the tv apart a little while ago, cleaned it out and made sure nothing was roasted. i dont really want to dig into my ps3. can someone help me?

Those should be fun to find lol.

ok, i hooked it up to my tv via the old av cable. the tv didnt see the connection and was displaying no signal. dont you have to go into the settings on the ps3 to change it from hdmi to the old av stuff? if so im screwed unless i can find someone with a tv with an hdmi jack...

  • mefredd May 14, 2009

did that, the tv only works with the hdmi cable when its set to 480p. as soon as i try to put it on 720p it does the "cascading white craziness." im assuming its my tv, since nobody else seems to have this problem with their ps3. the sound works fine and everything its just a lower quality picture than im used to with 720p.

  • mefredd May 14, 2009

when i put it on 720p the tv says unknown input timing as well. i guess i shouldn't rule out the ps3 until i find someone with an hdtv to test it out on but like i said, nobody else has this problem. come to think of it, nobody else has this problem with their tv either. could the actual hdmi cord be messed up somehow? i tested as many of the connections on the cord as i could with the equipment i have and as far as i can tell they all are showing minimal resistance.

you would have to see it in order to know exactly what im talking about. and it only does it when i tell the ps3 to use 720p. i'll set it up for 720p and describe what happens later on.

ok. here's how i have my system set up. i have my ps3 hooked up to my tv (insignia ns-lcd26a) via an hdmi cable. from the tv, i have an optical cable going to my bose 321 receiver. the tv doesnt throw the bose an audio signal anymore. i just noticed that. i tried the optical cable on my older tv and it works fine. the bose works fine too. im pretty sure the insignia is the problem. what do you think?

First thing you should try is using the regular old AV cables. That way we know if it's an hdmi problem or a video problem with the PS3. Hook them up, do the manual video reset ( hold down the power button until you hear a second beep, quickly release) and then post back here with the results.

NO, listen to me. While the PS3 is off (red led) hold down the power until you hear the second beep and quickly release.

That will reset the video display to default (av cables).

It could be the cable, but it's not likely, nonetheless I wouldn't rule it out just yet.

Toshiba 32AV500U HDMI issues

The Toshiba 32AV500U cannot display 1080p. Hook up your PS3 to your computer monitor, provided that it can display 1080p, or some other TV that can, then change your Video Output settings under Settings> Display Settings and uncheck 1080p, which will allow the PS3 to display in 1080i. Once you do that, then hook up the Toshiba via HDMI and it will work with no problem.
