Question about Garden

1 Answer

My Sears push lawnmower wont start....no spark. I think it may be the electronic ignition module(?) It has always needed to have a cleaning between the ignition module and the opposing magnet to get it to start the first time each spring. This year it wont do anything. When I pull the start rope, the engine cylinder pumps gas fumes right out so I know that it is getting gas and air. Thanks for any help you can give me on this Craig Stinson

Hello:

>>The Following is a Basic Instruction File I Made for Checking the Coil/Ign Coil/Magnetron/Armature on Small Engines. Any Input is Appreciated.
>>**To Check the Ign Coil; Remove the Spark Plug/s.
>>With a Good Plug, Wrap a Wire Around the Threads of the Plug and Attach the Other End of the Wire to the Engine Block. >>Remove the Blower Housing (metal engine cover). The Wire that is Connected to the Coil/Ign Module from the Shut Off Switch needs to be Removed (unplugged) from the Coil/Ign Module.
>>Now Check for Spark at the Plug.
>>If Spark, then the Shut Off Switch or the Wire is Bad.
>>If Still No Spark, then the Coil/Ign Module is Bad. If there IS Spark, then, If there are Safety Switches on this Unit and the Coil is Good; you Need to Check the Safety Switches for Being Bad and Check the Oil Guard Switch also.**
>>The Following is an Instruction File for the Safety Switch System. Any Input is Appreciated.
>>The Color Code of the Wires May be Different than those I Use as a Reference in the Instruction File.
>>**PLEASE REMEMBER THAT THE INSTRUCTIONS FOR CHECKING THE SAFETY SWITCHES IS JUST THAT!!! FOR CHECKING ONLY.
>>I NEVER Suggest a Mower be Operated with a Safety Device or Switch Disconnected or Bypassed.
>>**Now. On Some Model Mowers you can Simply Unplug the Safety Switch from the Harness. On Other Models you have to Place a Jumper Wire Between the Harness Terminals (on the 4 Post Switch (Clutch/Brake) Jumper from Same Color Wire (Example: White to White) First and then Check for Fire, Now Include the Black to Black Wires if No Fire. Check the Clutch/Brake and the Blade/PTO Safety Switches First. Then Check the Oil Guard Switch (if Applicable). Check the Seat Safety Last. Usually the Seat Safety is Not in the System for Starting the Engine. Just to Ensure Someone is in the Seat when Engaging the Transaxle and/or Blades. Use a Paper Clip or a Short Wire to Make a Jumper.**
>>Use a Multimeter and Check the Continuity of the Switch. The Meter should Show when the Contacts are Closed and Open. The Meter will Swing All the Way Over when the Switch Contacts are Closed and Swing Back to the Rest Point when the Switch Contacts are Open.

APRILIA CLASSIC 125 WONT SPARK

Hi, Downey if you have a CKP sensor it needs compression to send the correct signal to the ICM/ECM, make sure both spark plugs are in heads and use a grounded third plug to check for spark or hold spark plug cable close to spark plug in the head. If still not getting spark the usual suspects are:
1. Fouled spark plugs.
2. Discharged battery, check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
3. Loose connection at ignition coil or plug between ignition sensor and module.
4. Spark plug cables in bad condition, shorting / leaking, spark plug cable connections loose.
5. Faulty ignition coil or ignition / electronic module
6. Failed CKP, CMP, or BAS sensor.
7. Faulty ignition switch.
8. Security alarm failing to disarm.

My 1989 Nissan Navara wont start

Wait a minute. Points on an '89 Nissan? I think all Nissans had electronic ignition after about 1979 or 1980, so no points, but an electronic ignition module-or, igniter, as they call it.
Now you haven't said if you have checked for spark on any of the spark plug wires. If you have a good, blue energetic spark from a plug wire end when the engine is cranked over, your ignition system is good-look elsewhere for why it won't start-like is the pump coming on, and is gas up to the engine. If a weak or no spark, might be the igniter. Post back with your findings. And say if the car has a carburetor or throttle body injection?

Sears lawnmower kills after mowing for 10 minutes doesn't restart till rested a long time. Repair man says nothing wrong with it.

That is the symptom of a failing ignition module. With the airbox cover and air filter removed run the unit till it fails. Immediately squirt a shot of carb cleaner into the carb and try to restart. If it restarts see if you can keep it running on the carb cleaner for a few seconds. If it wont restart or stay running then its likely an ignition module. If it does restart and keeps running on hte prime then you have a fuel issue.
Other things to check: spark plugs can fail when they get hot, checkt o make sure the engine stop cable is pulling the bail off ground sufficiently. If the cable has stretched it may not pull the bail completely off ground causing intermitent spark.

I have a yardman lawnmower it has gas, oil level is good but wont start, even after priming, priming is 3 pushes of the prime button, i did as directed and still wont start after pulling the cord for 15...

If the fuel pumped when you prime then the next step would be to check the spark. This can be done by removing the spark plug and then reattaching the wire to the plug and grounding the plug to the engine block. Then you need to have someone to try and start it, while watching for spark. It is easier to see if this is not done in bright sunlight. If no spark seen or heard, then it is either the spark plug or the ignition module, most likely the spark plug. If you have another machine available you can pull the plug wire and hook it to the plug from your mower and ground it to the block and try starting. If you get good spark, then the problem is the ignition module, if no spark, then replace plug.

Craftman lt3000 lawnmower just stop running and can't get it to start. have tested battery and spark plugs both r good.

The ignition module on the engine may have gone bad. it may need to be replaced. Plus check air filter to make sure it is clean.

Lawnmower wont start

Are you getting spark first of all. If you are getting spark do you have good gas? If you have good gas most likely your carb needs some attention maybe you had some old gas sitting in there and something inside is gummed up it might need cleaning.

Starts but does not continue to run (5-6 seconds)this after priming-- had same problem with Sears lawnmower which turned out to be the solid state ignition module...Are these modules a problem and should I...

Check the fuel lines for cracks/breaks. If they are o.k., then:

You will need to disassemble the carburetor and spray with carb.cleaner. Make sure the small screen is free of debris. (Should be able to see daylight through it.)

Use a Den Tek Brush, (http://www.drugstore.com/products/prod.asp?pid=165357&catid=1152),to clean the small portals in carb. These portals can become blocked. Reassemble and start.

If the carb. parts are more than 4 years old, you may have to replace them.

If you need further assistance, just let me know.

Requires several times just to get started and then runs fine for about 5-minutes and cuts then cuts out on its own. Then have to wait for about 10-15 minutes to start again but still requires several...

The most likely problem is the ignition module. It is probably going out. when a bad ignition module gets hot from use, it stops working, which kills the lawn mower since there is no spark. Once it cools off it sometimes works. This can be a some what costly part, $60 - $80. You might want to take it to a lawnmower repair shop and have them check it out, since there are other issues that could be the cause to your problem. If you have a spark tester, you could test the ignition module to see if you get spark, both before you start the mower, and after it quits on you.
