IPod Nano 3G has Apple icon on/off

I downloaded the latest iTunes (7.4.3.1) and iPod software update 1.0.2.  After it installed the iPod software the Apple icon fades slowly on then off then on then off, etc.  None of the buttons respond and the iPod does not show up in the iTunes list.

I tried all the button combinations until I found the Pause/Select combo that put it into the Disk Mode.  Once there I could Restore it from iTunes.  But you are correct in saying it would be in that waiting state all day.

You're the greatest , dear DrivingJack. I've got the same problem and I was about to send my iPod back to its vendor when I found your post which is really something. I've never seen this touch combination in no document coming with an iPod. Thanks , man. Julius.

update to 1.1.3 and when it restarted it would just keep rebooting itself and has not since. I have tried restoring it many times. I have even gotten it into disk mode and iTunes sees it and will say its restoring it but it still does the same thing

Thank you! I have been freaking out for the past two hours trying to figure out what happen to my iPod!  I put it in to sync, there was some update, I come back, and it was just stuck on the Apple icon then lighting up/then off.  I thought I saw this solution somewhere else but it didn't seem to work.  It worked this time, I was able to get it on Disk Mode, and restore it.  It seems to be working again since it's actually offering more than the apple logo now.  Thank you DrivingJack, I can now resume my day and all the things I had to do, but could not because my "baby" was sick :-)

3rd Generation iPod Touch

The third generation of iPods includes iPod Shuffle, iPod Touch and iPod Nano. Installing the latest software for each of these models involves the same process and requires the latest version of iTunes to perform. The 3rd generation iPod Touch uses the same iOS 4 operating system that the iPhone uses. You can download the latest version of iTunes from the Apple website for free. With iTunes, you can install the most up-to-date software on any 3rd generation iPod for free as well.

Download iTunes from the Apple website or check for the latest update by clicking "Help" at the top of the screen. Scroll down to "Check for Updates." Open iTunes either by clicking its icon in the Start menu or by connecting your iPod to your computer with the sync cable. This cable looks like an ordinary USB cable with a special attachment on the end that plug into your iPod. If you have lost your original cable, you will need to purchase a replacement. Any type of iPod sync cable will work, as long as it is compatible with your 3rd generation model. Wait for iTunes to update or restore your iPod automatically. Enter your iPod's name in the top field when you are prompted. Check the box next to "Automatically update songs on my iPod" if you want iTunes to sync your hard drive's playlist with your iPod every time you plug in your iPod. Select your iPod from the "Source" list on the left side of the screen if you need to update your software. This will take you to a screen with links to iPod software updates. Click on "Check for Update" to look for the most up-to-date iPod software, and click "Download" and "Install" to install the software. Do not unplug your iPod during installation. Check the box next to "Automatically copy photos to my iPod" to sync a photo folder on your hard drive with an iPod with a color screen. Choose the folder you wish to sync with your iPod from the "Synchronize photos from" menu. Click "Next" to move to the final screen. Click "Register My iPod" to send your personal information to Apple and then click "Finish" to end the installation. Your iPod will appear in the "Source" list on the left side of the screen. New itouch, downloaded apps will only open for a second. help!

Before I begin, I must state that my expertise is limited because of the small amount of details you have provided. I will post my best solution now, but please show more detail in the future.

I am assuming if the iPod touch is new, it is a 3G (third generation, not to be confused with the 3G data network). Either way, my solution would be about the same for the 1G, 2G, or 3G. I own a 2G right now.

The "only open for a second" problem is called "crashing". The fact that it is crashing could mean that you need the most security, available in Apple's latest software updates. Please try to download the latest update by reading the below instructions:

If you haven't already, please download and install the latest version of iTunes from www.apple.com/itunes . Then, plug your iPod into the computer via the USB cord that came with the iPod. After iTunes and your computer both recognize it, click on your iPod in iTunes. Then click Check for Software Update to download and install the latest iPod touch software directly from Apple for the most security.

Cheers and good luck,

DMKlunk

Apple iPod is Locked

There is only one way - and it will erase all your songs (applies to most models, not just Nano):

If you lock your iPod nano screen and can’t unlock it
Normally, if you can connect your iPod nano to the computer it is authorized to work with, your iPod nano automatically unlocks. If the computer authorized to work with your iPod nano is unavailable, you can connect iPod nano to another computer and use iPod Updater to restore your iPod software. See the next section for more information.
If you want to change the screen lock combination and you can’t remember the current combination, you must restore the iPod software, and then set a new combination.
Updating and Restoring iPod Software
You can use iPod Updater to update or restore your iPod software. Apple periodically
updates iPod software to improve performance or add features. It is recommended that
you update your iPod nano to use the latest software. You can also restore the software,
which puts iPod nano back in its original state.
- If you choose to update, the software is updated, but your settings and songs are not
affected.
- If you choose to restore, all data is erased from your iPod nano, including songs, files,
contacts, photos, calendar information, and any other data. All iPod nano settings are
restored to their original state.
To update or restore iPod nano with the latest software:
1 Go to www.apple.com/support/ipod and download the latest iPod Update. The update
has the latest software for all models of iPod.
2 Double-click the software installation file and follow the onscreen instructions to install
the iPod update.
3 Connect iPod nano to your computer and open iTunes. The iPod Updater application
opens.
If you’re using a Windows PC and the iPod Updater application doesn’t open
automatically, you can find the updater by choosing Start > All Programs > iPod.
4 Follow the onscreen instructions to update or restore iPod software.
If you use the iPod Updater application and it doesn’t recognize that iPod nano is
connected to your computer, reset iPod nano (see page 45).
If you want to restore iPod software and you don’t have an Internet connection, you
can use the iPod Updater application that was installed on your computer when you
installed the software from the iPod CD.
