1 Answer

Western Digital 500GB

I can't copy my files over to my macbook pro says:

'D_S store could not be read or written. error code -36'.
I have previously defragmented the drive with `idfrag' and it worked but now even it won't even defrag and says:

Unable to move extent (12146958, 8) to 2011283 for file "/Audio/Pro Tools Sessions/Tape Music 7/masters/masters/Session File Backups/masters.bak.01.ptf" (CNID 4394); HFS errors:

hfs_extent.c:422 (from 0x40bb2):
(54) Disk block move failed (from 97175664, to 16091344, blocks 64, size 512, errno 5)

any help is much appreciated.

That drive is not suitable for pro-tools. Look for something that has the Oxford 911 or 924 chipset. HFS is the format. Did you format that drive after you bought it? Are you using both windows and os X with either boot camp or parallels?

I keep getting error -36 like some of my files are corrupted is there anything I can do?

If you are getting a corrupted data message you can try to run disk cleanup on the drive to see if this fixes the problem.

How to run Check Disk in Windows 7

If this does not fix the problem then you will need to backup your files off the drive and do a full format. If you still have trouble after formatting the drive this is a sign that the drive is failing.

I am using SuperDuper to clone my 160GB MacBook Hard Drive to a 500GB Western Digital Scorpio Blue. My problem is that I cannot determine why neither the SuperDuper program nor the MacBook itself...

The Western Digital Scorpio Blue 500GB hard drive is formatted for PC, not Mac. The simplest way to get your MacBook to recognize this new drive--and therefore copy the files from your old drive--is to plug it in to a PC and format the drive. I was advised to format with FAT 16, as this would be recognized by my MacBook. Fortunately, the process was not that involved, since the Vista-driven PC found the drivers for the WD Scorpio Blue automatically. Once formatted, I safely removed the drive and plugged it into my MacBook via a USB port using a BYTECC Drive Mate. Magically, it now appeared on my MacBook Desktop and was recognized by the cloning software I was using, SuperDuper. Three hours later, the files on my old hard drive were successfully cloned onto the Scorpio Blue--except now I had an additional 364GB of storage space. Swapping out the old drive and replacing it with the new was not a big deal at all--just make sure you have the right screwdriver for the last task--a Torx #6. Mission accomplished.

I cannot copy files FROM my Western Digital 500GB

Check the file system of your hard drive. If your PC is recognizing it, check if its a FAT or NTFS. If it is NTFS then you have to reformat it using your Mac and choose FAT. Mac OS recognizes NTFS as a read only drive. If you plan using it with your PC and MAC you should format it using your mac and choose MS-DOS in disc Utility. You cannot format the drive using your PC Computer with a FAT file system because of the capacity. Only Mac can format it with a FAT file system.
