ROPE ON MOWER WON'T PULL OUT

I WAS MOWING USING TROY BILT 430 SERIES LAWN MOWER. IT SHUT OFF DUE TO HIGH GRASS. I TRIED TO RESTART IT AND THE ROPE WOULDN'T COME OUT ENOUGH TO PULL. I CAN'T GET THE TOP PART OVER ROPE PLATE OFF TO CHECK IT. CAN YOU SHOW ME HOW OR WHAT KIND OF TOO TO USE? THANKS! I have at least a similar problem. When the mower dies, the restart pull feels like I'm trying to pull a stubborn mule up a hill. I have no idea why, but I found that if I push the stopped mower a few feet the pull start operates easily again. Anyone know why?

Look under neath and see if anything is stuck in the blade. You probly have a cover for the top part; see if you can pop off a plastic top if you have one.

SOURCE: ROPE ON MOWER WON'T PULL OUT

I agree, it sounds like the mower is fouled with foliage at the blade. Pull off the spark plug wire and tilt the mower on its side opposite of the carburetor, check the underside of the mower for impacted grass clippings.

Normally an indication of poor air flow. Replace air filter. Clean outside of carb with carb cleaned to ensure choke is free to operate. Go real slow in tall grass, some mowers don't have the torque to do tall grass, only use 1/2 of the deck width and have side discharge open.

Replace engine, only 1 yr. warrenty. Engine about $119 at Harbor Freight. Easy to change out. all Harbor Freight engines are Hondas. Bolt pattern same. 160cc or 190cc will work. Remove blade, remove mounting screws, replace engine. Carb may be the same for throttle connections. Reinstall blade. 10 pulls required to start engine 1st time. 1 pull after that. Pull 1/2 way 4 times 1st to prime even if you use the primer bulb. Ensure oil is full, 30w oil. Excellent engines good for 7-8 yrs with proper maintenance. Observe cable connections before old engine removal. Take pics.

Starter rope on walk behind mower is hard to pull so mower won't start

Pull the spark plug out and give it a pull. It should pull VERY easily. You could have a vapor lock inside the cylinder and this will clear it. If it still doesn't pull easily with the plug removed then you've probably either bent the crank shaft or seized the engine, due to a lack of oil in it. Hope this helps. Best of luck.

I had the same problem with my Troy-Bilt self propelled lawn mower. You have to use the grass catcher if your grass is high. Also, I mowed wet grass and it made my belt slip off the pulley and created a new problem, somowing wet grass is definitely not a good idea.

You need to remove the rope hand recoil - which will unbolt, and rewind the rope. The coil spring may be broken or have become unlatched from its mounting point. There should only be about four parts, the housing, the rope, the reel that the rope goes(with the rachet in the center) in and the spring that brings the rope back. If there is nothing broken, you can reassemble it. Often times the mechanism is gummed up and needs cleaned, cause of grass, dirt getting into the mechanism. Also ropes need changed, so if it is old do that or get it done for you. This is not a high cost item for a saw shop to fix if you can't do it yourself. Hope this helps you, Rick

Problem mowing my lawn.

I had the same problem and I already found those recommended solutions\ causes on the web:
1. The motor isn't on full throttle.
2. The blade is upside down.
3. The grass is too high when cutting it.
4. Overlap your cuts.

It helped my problem/ I hope it will help yours too!
