Question about Dryers

Open Question

It only runs when the START button is held in.

Once the START button is released, the dryer stops.

Otherwise, it's fine. It ignights and runs, but only with the switch held in.

Same here. I replaced the thermal switch due to the fact that the dryer just died suddenly. It will no run, but only when the start button is held down. I am going to check a few more things. If I find it, I will post an answer.

SOURCE: GE dryer starts but..... stops

What you describe is either a failed evenheat board or a failed motor relay.
Please post the complete model number from the machine and I can help you narrow it down. There should be a wiring diagram inside the console with voltage checks also.
Thanks/Mike

SOURCE: Bosch WTA 3100 Tumble Dryer ON/OFF switch

The on/off switch is combined with the door release switch in one item - part number 154145 (a little over £20) and my problem was the door interlock bit had failed. The following worked for me :
Plug out, remove top panel, and open door + look up at switch panel - you see 5 slots under the switch panel (the 2 outer ones are mostly covered by the main front panel). Start at either side and work across, using as wide-bladed a screwdriver as will fit across the slot width : put a wood block under blade as a support and lever bottom of panel towards front - each has a plastic pin behind pointing towards the rear, held by a spring clip. Each will pop clear and when all are unclipped you rotate the panel outwards from the bottom edge, taking the timer knob and its drive linkage with it. To get switch out I removed the door and the screws around the main front panel - one is hidden behind a cover plug below the access port (to gain access to bottom screws on main panel, lever the bottom panel outwards along its top edge).

SOURCE: Drum doesn't turn, start switch

Make sure there's power getting to the dryer. Check for a tripped circuit breaker or a blown fuse. Check the wall socket for power with a voltmeter or by plugging something else in.
2. Door switch / Door switch actuator lever
The dryer would not start with a broken door switch. Replace the door switch if found defective.

Most dryers have a door switch actuator lever - when you close a dryer door, it presses against the lever, which actuates the door switch. If the lever is broken, the switch would not activate and the dryer would not start. Replace the lever, if broken.

Note: Door switch actuator lever usually comes with the door switch assembly and it is recommended to get the whole assembly since there is almost no price difference between the door switch assembly and just the lever. Check your model for more details.

3. Thermal fuse
Most dryers have a thermal fuse, which burns out when the dryer overheats, in which case the dryer will either not run at all or stop heating. The fuse is usually located on the vent duct, inside the dryer. A blown fuse will show no continuity when measured with a meter. Before replacing the fuse, make sure the blower wheel is not broken or clogged, and there is nothing blocking the venting.

Note: It is recommended by most dryer manufacturers to replace a hi-limit thermostat when replacing a thermal fuse.

4. Timer
Replace if defective (note: uncommon problem).

I have a ge model# gtdx100emoww electric dryer that will only work if the start button is held in. Once released it stops.

Yep, it's the start/run switch at the motor, can get stuck with lint after a long time. It's actually not too difficult to change, make sure you note the location of every wire. Clean everything real good with a vacuum cleaner, get all the lint dust out of the motor, etc.
Cleaning may free the switch, and there should be a drawing showing how to put the belt back on, otherwise, make a drawing.

My problem is when i start my dryer it ignights and runs till it heats up and the the flame goes out till it cools off and then ignights and so on

Hi- Sound like the high temp. thermostat is tripping. You may try running it without the vent attached and see if it will run that way. I have had this happen when the vent is too obstructed and the heat cant get out fast enough. Otherwise have someone out to look at it. Hope that helps a little.

My Kenmore Electric dryer will not run continuously. Once I push the start button it comes on but when I release the button it cuts off. Door is closed and everything seems to be fine otherwise.

Hi, If the motor only runs while the start button is pushed, the motor start winding is going bad. The motor will need replaced to fix your dryer.
Please let me know if I can assist you further.

Whirlpool 110 electric dryer will not keep running

When you press the start button you complete a circuit bringing the juice into your dryer to run the motor the igniter or heating elements and what ever else goes whee when your dryer is drying. So if you press the button to complete the circuit then when you let go of the button it would stand to reason that it break that flow and shut it all down. However in a dryer there is something of a centrifugal switch that kicks in and keeps that circuit open and flowing with juice once the drum begins to turn and you let go of the button. That's why in a normal situation if you don't hold the button down long enough the dryer will cut right back off or if you open the door to the dryer to throw something in and close it before it quits turning it will stay running. Sounds like you could add this centrifugal switch to the list of possible culprits in this mystery. O7OUT
