Question about Heating & Cooling

1 Answer

Trane TTR042c100A2 air compressor squeaks very loud like a cricket when it's on. We recently got annual maintenance done on it and the condensor coils cleaned. Is something loose or is it on its way out? It is 12 years old...

Did the tech who did the maintenance tell you anything about the noise? If not, don't use him again. They should always advise the customer about their unit and what's going on with it.

Now, are you sure it is not the fan making the noise? Be sure before you condemn the entire unit. Get an answer to this before we continue. A 12 year old unit may need to be "Put Down" but not without doing the proper checking.

Good luck and get back to me.

Sounds like your bearings are on the way out and or there is no oil in the sump.

Brand New 2 weeks old 4 ton Trane compressor leaks a lot of water onto pad

If the unit is running in cold weather than there is ice building up on the coils located outside. This is normal in that the unit is running in heat pump mode heating inside and cooling outside, After the unit detects the ice build up it briefly reverses the cycle heating the outside coils melting(defrosting) the ice which you observe as water on the pad.

The video gives you an example of the defrost cycle!

Why does my A/C condenser compressor turn on and off every 5 minutes?

You need good airflow across the indoor coil, the evaporator. Air warms the refrigerant. If there is no airflow, the refrigerant will come back out freezing cold (in liquid form) and can damage the compressor valves. Before charging any ac unit, good airflow must be checked for across both evaporator and condensor.
Too much, overcharging will cause freezing all the way back to the compressor in a capilary tube type of ac.
Where is it the refrigeration lines are freezing cold?

New A/C Unit makes loud noise when it starts up

It shouldn't be too loud. You don't explain where the noise is coming from? The air handler/furnace or the outdoor unit.

What are the annual checks and servicing that should be done can these be done at home by a handy man?

Are you refering to a split system/ furnace and Central Air? Start with the furnace filter at the indoor
unit. Most newer furnaces do not have an oil plug for
the blower motor but it does not hurt to check to see
if it has oil ports.

You can take a thermometer and take a temperature difference across the coil which should be between

At the outdoor unit you can check the condensor fan
motor to see if it has oil ports. After you have the top
of the fan off to the side, you can take a garden hose
and wash the condensor from the inside to the outside of the coil.

You can start the cooling and make sure that hot air
is discharging out of the top of the condensor. Check
to see if the insulated suction line is getting cool.

Why does my fan runs continus. and the condenser won't run out side.

The fan runs continously because your condensor is not kicking on and removing the heat. The thermostat needs to come under the set temp. to kick off the fan. If your compressor doesn't run and the fan on the outside unit does run, your compressor has an issue. If nothing runs outside, then your transformer on the inside unit(air handler) has an issue. This could also be a control relay on the condenser or the air handler.

A/C blows warm air

The condensate line was filling and the kill switch was turning off the compressors but the blower is not tied in so it kept running. When the water pump caught up it would take five minutes to turn back on and the temperature was roller coastering. They disconnected the kill switch. now I'm watching to see where the condensate will go if the pump can't keep up. I'm not sure for the long term if this is the best solution.

Often when I work on something and it quits after a short while it is the result of something I disturbed in making the repair. I would check the connections to the compressor, the start/run capacitor, and the low pressure switch if there is one. Sometimes the slip-on terminals used on capacitors and the like are easily yielded in removal/reconnection and when that happens they can be resistive, causing them to fail from overheating. Also check the low pressure switch for continuity (again if there is one).

Loud AC unit outside trane high efficiency xb1000

The noise could be the fan trying to pull air through the condensor. Service cleaning should improve cooling and lower noise level.
