The heating element wire is really thin and there is a great posssibilty of breakage. There is also a spring switch in which the lever locks when toasting. needs replacement.

Hardware stores and DIY shops ususally have parts for this, other than that you'd have to contact their accredited repair shop for original parts.

Toasters these days are throw away items when the fail unless they are catering versions. If it just needs soldering, a television repair shop would do it.

Only the side elements are working on the toaster. The middle elements which would toast one side of a slice of bread are not working. Is it possible to repair/replace the middle elements?

Maybe. Unplug the toaster and remove the bottom plate as you would for cleaning. look for the wires connected to the middle elements and see if one has become disconnected or broken. If one or more of the connections to the middle element is a quick disconnect type (click link for a picture), then inspect it for overheating, oxidation or corrosion. You may be able to clean it up with a Scotch-brite metal polishing pad.

On my toaster, the connections to the heater elements are metal strips riveted to tabs from the element assemblies. One strip is riveted to the power neutral; the other has a quick disconnect tab for a wire from the thermostat. A loose or broken rivet could be the problem, but do not use an aluminum pop rivet to repair it. It can't take the heat, even if you could find one small enough.

I've seen toaster heater elements evaporate over the years - they get a hot spot, which burns off metal, making it thinner and hotter until finally there's nothing left there. At that point the element is gone. I suppose if you could find nichrome ribbon wire of the same width and thickness as the original, you could rebuild the heating element plate, but it would be a delicate task because the mica insulating material is fragile. It's probably more practical to scavenge a working heater assembly from another toaster of similar design, if the electrical connections are serviceable with the tools you have.

Unless this is a very fancy unit, it's probably cheaper and easier to scrap it out and replace the whole thing.

Why won't outside elements on both slots of 4 slice toaster come on?

The heater wire has opened. You should be able to see where the break in the wire is. Unfortunately there is no easy fix for that. New toaster time.

My black & decker tro964 is not heating

That may sound like a stupid question, but is it plugged in?
Have you tried to plug in the toaster on a different power outlet?
If there is a ground fault switch where the toaster is plugged in (that's those outlets which have 2 buttons on the front, one labeld "Test" the other usually labeled "Reset") unplug the toaster and push the "Reset" button and try the toaster again. To test, if the power outlet, were the toaster is usually plugged in, is working, try a hair dryer or any other device on that outlet.
Its most likely cheaper to replace the whole toaster than to replace the heating elements, for about 40 $ since that's the price of your toaster on some websites.

My ET-26 Hobart toaster will not cook 2 slices on either side unless both handles are pushed down !

That is strange, both sides are completely seperate electrically. Problems I have seen in the past are that some Hobart toasters are bun toasters and only toast one side of the bread. If that was the case you could look down into the toaster and see that only one side of each slot has a heating element. The other common problem is when someone changes a 220 volt to a 110 volt toaster by running the elements in series instead of paralle. at the terminal block. I am stumped on this one. I can't think of a fix for that. I am going to look at the wiring diagram again. If your question is still up, I will get back to you.

I honestly believe that the burned element in my toaster oven is replaceable
like a burned out oven element or dryed element. I thought someone would
show me how to replace the element. That didn't happen. I am dubious
about the need for experts via a commitment to a specialists' plan.

Only toast one side of the bread

The other side that isn't toasting has an open element. Usually, the good side will burn twice as hot, and may have stressed that element. You might want to replace both in that slot. make sure you check the voltage rating plate. 208 and 240 volt toasters use different elements.
I just posted the procedure to replace elements, in a similar post here.
