You can, in control panel, disable the touch pad. Remember what you do because you will need to reactivate it later!

Mouse pad stalls and i see a little red light on the mouse pad....i have a compaq laptop but not sure what version...how do i disable thi feature so i dont have to use a physical mouse

The little red light is likely from the red LED underneath your optical mouse. If the mouse cursor/pointer on the screen is jerky, it may mean the mouse pad is dirty and/or if the mouse is wireless, its battery is low and should be replaced. Most laptops have a touchpad as part of the keyboard. If you want to use that instead of a physical mouse, just put the physical mouse away and use the touchpad. Both should be active unless the touchpad was disabled. If the touchpad is disabled, you can re-enable it by clicking on control panel > mouse > device settings tab > enable button.

Have puchased. a acer wireless optical mouse how do I change over from the present mouse pad?

Theres nothing you need to do much, just plug in the wireless transmitter drive into the usb port, then download driver if one is required. Press the link button, usually a small button located under the wireless mouse.. then you should be good to go. You can disable the mouse pad, usually there is a button or a fn key to disable the mouse pad.

My computer comes on opens windows all looks ok as soon as i touch the cursor, nothing responds,

Make sure that the track-pad (mouse-pad) is not disabled. There should be a button located above the track-pad that allows you to disable or enable the track-pad. If not, I would use a USB mouse and then go into the Control Panel, mouse and change settings there to enable the track-pad.

Would like explanation of function key symbols I want to turn off the finger pad.

function key is Fn key on keyboard.
these keys might be in orange color
with the help of these keys you can control sound volume. you can adjust screen resolution like brightness .you can also turn off/on wireless features. These keys are like shorcuts keys to perform few functions on your laptop.

To turn off your the finger pad

You can use the Mouse Properties window to disable the touch pad and track stick or adjust their settings.
Open the Control Panel, and then click Mouse. For information about the Control Panel, see Windows Help and Support Center <findinfo.htm>.

In the Mouse Properties window:
Click the Device Select tab to disable the touch pad and track stick.
Click the Touch Pad tab to adjust touch pad and track stick settings.

Click OK to save the settings and close the window.

The scroll bar on my HP pavilion zv5000 does not work.

no. not scroll bar.
you are posted that your desired pointing device
is bad, dead, and the do not want the built in device working,
your unnamed MOUSE is bad. right.
ALPS tells us nothing. (is it a GP-410UB " wild guess.
is it USB mouse or PS2? what model mouse? the number.
what OS are you running, we can not guess this... and matters. big time.
there are 2 issues on notebooks, zv5000

1: SHUTTING OFF THE INTERNAL ,POINTING DEVICE(S)
do that in device manager, click unwanted device
and click (right) PICK DISABLE .
it now dead this internal, pointing device.

2nd: option to is click Mouse (CP) and then pick the internal
laptop , mouse, and find a tab there called.
what to do with 2 mice, (on mine it has , USB mouse shuts off internal mouse, not all can do this, my HP8540 you can't but the maker of the notebook pad had and upgrade from this pad, and now has this feature,)
ymmv, your mouse may vary.

2: The mouse external. what ALPS, is it USB or PS2
finding drivers for very old mice can be hard,
did you have internet connections when you plugged in this mouse? if yes, it will attempt to find a driver automatically (PnP magic)

next time say.
a wild example.
Im running Vista OS.
My glidepoint model, GP-410UB does not work right.
help.

the Control panel. 101
has a mouse icon
and a device manager icon
this is your only controls, besides REG hacks.
we can all those, all ways, but you need to tell the helpers, OS, and mouse model first. and if USB

Elimnate mouse

You are talking about the mouse-pad or also called track-pad, I don't think we have a spanish name for it. To disable clicking with your mosuepad (a.k.a. tapping) go into your control panel mouse options and you should be able to find an option that reads "enable tapping", just unchech the selection box next to it to disable this option.
