I am trying to boot from a flash drive on my portable laptop. The laptop does NOT have a CD-ROM or FLOPPY - I created a bootable Flash SD card and am trying to boot from that - I tried already to arrange for the boot order to load the flash drive first, but when I press the F-12 button (it says to press f-12 to select boot order) it doesn't show the flash as a bootable drive. Please someone help me!

Try pressing F12 at startup, you should get a boot option.

With any standard laptop (your Aspire included) the default boot disk should be set to drive C:
If the system is not finding drive C:, the boot sector may be damage or the drive may have failed completely.
Depending on your operating system (probably Win XP for this one) you can make a boot disk on a friend's optical drive and change the boot sequence in the BIOS setup to your optical drive.
Just make sure the disk you've made is compatible with the drive in your Aspire; such as CD - DVD+-, etc.
Once you can get some kind of prompt, either from a basic Desktop or just E:\ from your boot CD, try typing in "C:" (without the quotes) to see if it is accessible.
If not, the drive may be bad.
If the drive is still readable, you have more work to do to restore the damaged boot sector.

Recovery discs have certain run procedures, flash drives dont. I would suggest you obtail or lend and external USB writer

Start up the computer and hit F10 a few times during start-up and login to the BIOS and check that the USB drive precedes the hard disk and CD/DVD drives in the boot order. Use the + and - keys to move the boot devices up or down within the boot order. After you have completed this, hit the ESC key and then choose Select Save Changes and Exit. The computer will now attempt to boot from the devices in the order you have specified.
Would you kindly rate my answer please if this has helped resolve the problem - thanks :)
What happens when you turn the computer on?
If the bios is working enough to enable you to boot from a CD download the new bios from asus along with there AFUDOS.exe flash utility and make a bootable CD and copy both to it.
If the bios is completly none functional you should be getting this msg when you turn the computer on,
Boot Block Compatible Version Ver .010
Bad BIOS checksum. Starting BIOS Recovery
Checking for floppy . .
Floppy not found
Checking for CD rom . . .
CD not found
Checking for floppy . .
Floppy not found
Checking for CD rom . . .
CD not found
Repeat adinfinitum.
If this is the case you need download the most recent BIOS from compaq and either copy it to a bootable CD if you have this capability or buy a floppy drive for $5 and make a bootable floppy on a working computer and copy this BIOS file to it. Then rename the bios file to A8N32SLI.ROM.
You may not even need make the floppy bootable but I would just in case.
Stick the floppy in the drive turn the computer on and you will see
Boot Block Compatible Version Ver .010
Bad BIOS checksum. Starting BIOS Recovery
Checking for floppy . . .
Floppy found.
Reading file "A8N32SLI.ROM" . Completed.
Start Erasing...
Start programing . . ./
Please turn off your system and power on again to get system back.
and happy days will be here.
That's where you need to check to get solution to your problem, if not... try these
1. your settings in your bios
2. faulty cable/wire to your media device (hard drive, cd/dvd rom, etc)
3. The cmos battery (which indirectly points to your bios settings)
Hope this helps!
