Question about iRiver X20 MP3 Player

5 Answers

I've had 2 crashed iriver X20

When i turn my irvier on the launch programs freeze and then turns off. The blue Initializing screen comes on and the Build Library hour glass come on and turns a couple of times before it stops dead. It this a iriver fault or a problem with the files i am loading onto it? It's happened to 2 players!

yes my iriver x20 crashes and turns off too. I have read the solution but how do i know what type of music will play on my iriver and not have it freeze up and turn off?

  • zobeet Nov 10, 2007

My iriver was turning on, showing the turning hourglass a couple of times then freezing at 'build library.' I returned it for another, had same problem after loading empty player with podcasts, no music. Now new one freezes immediately at 'build library' and isn't recognized by my PC so I can't even see it.

  • wndnzt Nov 12, 2007

After loading some musics my x20 now frozens in the building library part...
but how do I remove the musics from my x20 with it isn`t even recognized by my computer anymore? (I tried in windows vista)

  • Anonymous Nov 13, 2007

I have the same problem. Startup, Build Library, Initialization and....freeze.

The device is not recognised at all on USB.

Does anyone know how could I format the X20 in this case ?

    Many thanks.

I've had 3 X20 8gb players freeze on the "build Library" window and returned them in person to have them replaced which they've done. All they can tell me is it is a problem and they are aware it happens.Since I bought mine 5 weeks ago I've just had the third one crash.I'm doing everything by the book including disconnecting properly so there has to be a problem with the software supplied eh?..Dave

  • Anonymous Nov 15, 2007

I have the same problem. But of course can't remove or delete the files or format as the device never gets past initialising. So isn't detected by USB. Any ideas?

  • sadamien Nov 29, 2007

I have had the same problem with three devices now. They keep giving me new ones. I agree with mixmaster that the problem is related to bad ID3 tags causing the system to freeze. However, once this error has occurred there is no way to connect to the device to remove the files anyway. The system becomes useless.

  • Anonymous Dec 09, 2007

Same here. Just by the way, how are you supposed to format a PMP that has no reset
button, and is basically a brick (as in: not even detected by the PC)?

Returning it seems the only option.

  • Ravenwere Dec 14, 2007

Transferred 3 albums and 2 avi's to the x20. It shows initializing screen with the Build Library message and freezes there. Apparently it is something to do with the id3 tags on some music. It is all very well to say reformat but how??? My previous iRiver had a reset function but this does not. Most people have returned the players for replacement!

  • Anonymous Dec 16, 2007

When i turned on my X20, it just froze on the hour glass until it turns off. How can i format the iriver when its turned off?

  • Ravenwere Mar 29, 2008

Further to my previous comment. I ended up getting the iRiver replaced - no problems. The comment was that it was the avi format that needs to be modified on transfer to the iRiver. To do this I should have used the software provided. But.. as the software provided is windows based and I run Linux....and no the software doesn't function using wine emulation. I ended up recommissioning an old XP computer.

Wont go out blue screen and say initializing. Where is the magic reset button to get back to its out of the box state?

  • Anonymous May 18, 2008

  • Anonymous Jan 31, 2009

I have the same freeze problem. Please post here the solution because I can't find it anywhere else and iriver page somehow does not work on any of my computers.

  • krustbot Mar 10, 2009

same as others. uploaded some P2P shared files to the iRiver and it gets frozen on "build library" (having being disconnected from computer and turned on). is frozen on build library and then turns itself off.

i disconnected iRiver battery but that didn't work. can't find a reset button. will read on and see what the solution is...

Hi. I just had solved my Build Library problem. Use my solution on your own risk.
The solution is the following:
1. open up a player (find 8 screws, not 6, 2 of them are on the left side of the player under the round stickers)
2. jently take off a circut board. (you need to access its bottom)
3. Find a memory chip. It is labeled like "samsung k9hbg08u1m"
4. find chip's key meaning start of pin numbering (small circle on the corner). There are 48pins. 24 on the left side (1-24) and 20 on the right (48-25) see chip's manual http://catalog.gaw.ru/index.php?page=document&id=11348 page 4
I've had 2 crashed iriver X20 - a56d1a4.jpg

5. On the right side find pins 32-29 (find them as the second 4 pins from the chip's circle key opposite corner)
6. Connect them together with some metalic wire (don't touch two middle pins on the right side of chip, it is chip's power supply).
7. Holding those pins together connect USB cable to player's socket.
8. After a while player will show error on its screen, get metallic wire out of pins, and then the player will be available as flash storage on the PC.
9. Format flash storage with quick format.
10. Disconnect and assemble the player back.
11. Connect to PC and upload new music.
12. Feedback to fzymarev()yandex.ru

Thank you so much!!!!! I did this and it worked! So incredible! It was hard, but it worked!
I was going to throw it and I thought I should look for a solution on the internet for the last time. I really didn't believe it will work.
    You're a genius.

I've tried fzymarev 's solution but it didn't work connecting 32-19 pins.
instead i've connected 2 times the pins 9 and 12 (9-enbles and disables the chip, 12-powes the chip).
the 1-st time the i disabled the chip, the second time the chip started.
afterward i've reseted the player from it's menu, and now i'm listening to my music again :D

I use a microsd to load files that i havent tried on the device before, to test safely. If it crashes then i can simply remove the microsd and clear it. If the "bad" or incorrecly encoded files are loaded onto the internal memory of the device then you will be unable to clear or bypass the "building library" stage and the device is bricked. Take it back to where you bought it and get it replaced if this happens, that's what I had to do when I bricked it.

Maybe we all need to write to iriver and request much improved firmware that allows wiping of the internal memory BEFORE the build library stage as well as the option to disable or an improvement of the "build library" functionality. A simple solution would be to set a flag in a config file whenever files are added to the device and it doesnt do a build library unless the config flag says new files are present and that it is required.

Its is a problem with the music you are putting on the device.

If the songs are from a P2P source or other "shared" site, they are generally encoded incorrectly, or the filenames contain incorrect characters or data.

When your device tries to build the database or library, it gets confused at said errors and freezes.

Easiest solution is to remove all the music on the device (i.e. - format the device) and transfer small amounts of music, 10 or so, until you can isolate the problematic tracks and trash them.

Best of Luck.

IRiver X20 movie problem

yea the iriver x20 isn't very reliable when it comes to video files. there could be like 10 things wrong with the codec and even if u fix all of them it doesn't help. your best bet is to convert to wmv using the iriver program or another program like winavi converter. its really fustrating i know but its just how the iriver works.

Accidentally formatted my x20, now OS Vista does not see x20 when plugged in. Is there any way to reinstall the firmware?

firstly reformat the x20 using the device itself...
after that install the iriver plus 3...
there should be something on the program to reinstall it...
i also think that on the disc that comes with the iriver, there is an install that might help...
otherwise try and reformat the comp

Good Luck...

Iriver X20- playlists and videos

yeah, basically all i did was change my settings to MTP.
then i went into internal hardrive (just in normal usb mode)
i selected the songs i wanted and right-clicked (make sure to do this one one of the songs you selected) in the options that come up it should say "create playlist" (in bold) i clicked that, it wouldn't let me rename the playlist... but it worked fine... and now they come up in the right place, i didn't even use Iriver plus 3.

Frozen iriver x20

If your player freezes on "Building Library" (usually a result of putting certain type of .m3u playlists or too big images in id3 tag):

1. Turn the player off - you may need to take the battery out to do this.
2. Hold the menu button in.
3. Still holding the menu button in, press the power button.
4. Keep holding both buttons in until you get a dialogue asking if you want to format internal memory ... say yes.
5. Your internal memory will be formatted and you will now be able to start your X20.

Try to figure out what file is causing X20 to freeze - i've found that pretty much any .m3u file will make it freeze on building library ... only about 2-3 out of about 100 i've tried have worked.
