Two images on the computer when uploaded

When i plug in my canon powershot sd870 is to the computer with the cable, and i open the camera via my computer, it will show 2 images of the same photo. one with an image name for example: IMG_1078 and the other with a name for example: IMG_1078 (8)
how do i get rid of the number in parantheses everytime i save the pictures on my computer?
