Question about Aquascape Designs Aquascape - AquaForce Solids Handling Pump - 1500 GPH Submersible Pump

2 Answers

Several years ago I jumped right into building a koi pond in my backyard. I have a rock waterfall about 3 feet high. I did not put a filter, or skimmer in. I first used a 3/4 sump pump in and that worked fine for a while. I went to a flojet pond pump after several tries. That works well for quite a while and always gunks up and slows down to a trickle. Each spring I get into the pond and scoop up a lot of the debris. That helps, but doesn't solve the water flow problem. I now am thinking that a solids handling pump may solve the problem. The pond holds about 6-700 gallons. Any ideas? THANKS from Memphis

The trick to a koi pond is filtration and the pump is part of it. What you want is a pump that will move the water about once an hour. So a 6-700 gal / hr pump would be minimum. But with a 3 ft waterfall you may need a 1500 to 3000 gal/hr pump. The box will tell you the gal/hr at a 3' head.
Now how do you keep the pump inlet from clogging? How about we only pump clean water. You do that with a gravity flow settling chamber. You need a outlet in your pond going to another big chamber where the fish muck can settle to the bottom. You can put filter material across the settling chamber. Remember the wider and slower the water the better. The solids will settle by gravity requiring less filters or filter cleaning. So then at the top of this chamber you now have clean water from there you can pump. Also with the fish waste settled you won't be grinding it up into a pump making a fine slurry that is always perfect for a summer long pea soup algae bloom.
Now at this point you should spray the water out causing the most oxygenation you can. This is where the beneficial bacteria can turn fish ammonia to nitrates and then to the much less toxic nitrates that floating plants and others love to feed on creating a balanced pond. These bacteria are aerobic and want maximum oxygen in the water. So design the bio filter with a media that is light and has maximum surface area. Keep this area out of direct sun and dont let the water blast the bacteria off the media. From there let the water fall back into the pond adding even more oxygen. My 500 gal pond uses these ideas and I only clean the pump inlet and the prefilter 1 or 2 times a year and the biofilter has never needed cleaning. There are many ways to keep a koi pond but the closer you stick to these rules the healthier your pond and fish will be and the less maintenance they will need.

NEED filter box to keep pond cleaner and pump healthier, the gunk will just build and cause pump loss and aggravation.

How do i get rid of frogs from my koi pond

Empty the pond for a week, keep the KOI n an alternative location.

The frogs will move on for the most part.

Second add a filter and a pump to the pond, this will eliminate and Mosquitoes and other such food source from there Appeal to the pond

Third, any tall grass should also be removed.

If you can't move the fish for a week, try fencing with a mesh netting around the pond, but make sure it is dug into the ground and at least 2 feet high, 3 would be better.

Also Snake repellant keep frogs at bay as well, but keep it far away from the Koi!!!

Will aquascape black pond foam hold up in a saltwater aquarium and for how long?

I have seen several tanks use this stuff in marine environments and it holds up for years. You should ave no problems with it in a saltwater aquarium. However, when making rock structures or whatever you're using the foam for, you must allow it to "cure" for a period of 2-4 days for the foam to offgas any potentially toxic chemicals that would be dispensed in your water. Once it "cures" it will become inert and will not harm anything

I have aquashift st 2000 2300 lph pond pump my pond is only 30inx30inx20in deep i also have a waterfall height from bottom of pond to filter appx 5 ft lenth of pipe appx 10ft my problem is not...

If you look at the pump cabilities the max life is either 2.3 or 2.4 meters. I.e 7.88 Feet max lift. I looked up even the 5000 Liter per hour pump and it only has a lift of 2 meters. 10 feet is 3.048 meters. It seems your height requirement lift of 10 fee is greater than the lift capability of the pump. You can... install a second pump with a hidden reservoir at the 5 ft lift mark behind the water fall to get the desired flow. Or change to a submersible 1/2 hp well pump as most will give you 10 to 12 GPM flow rate and will elimate the 10 ft lift problem. A shallow well pump could be installed above the water (encased / hidden and provide you with 23 feet of lift.

The problem you have is the 10 ft lift distance is more than your current pump can provide.

Thanks for choosing FixYa.

Definition:
Whenever proteins build up in pond water it causes the water to create foam, especially around the area at the bottom of the waterfall. One of the most frequent causes of protein build up is when the fish spawn so we see more foam in ponds during spring when spawning most often takes place. It's not dangerous but can be unsightly. Use fish-safe de-foaming agents to clear water.

Servicing a koi pond filter - Hoselock Bioforce

You can backflush it. Just swap the intake hose over to the outlet hose, then put the outlet hose on the intake. Don't forget to remove the outlet hose from the pond. Run the pump for a minute or so. Then switch the hoses back.
If it's real dirty, turn the pump off and take the outlet hose out of the pond, then undo the clips on top of the filter and lift of the top, then clean the sponges. Re-assemble.

Pump goes on and off

Does the pump have thermall protection? It sounds like its getting hot and tripping the thermal protection switch in the pump windings.
