Unallocated external drive

I am unable to read my external hard drive from my xp. When I tried to see if my other laptop could see it it in the computer management it came out unallocated. My other laptop is using vista. How do get my XP to see the external drive without losing any data?

Most of the software you need comes internally with the drive, plug in the power supply, plug in the USB port and reboot your computer allow the software to install. If you still don't see a drive letter, unplug the drive, reboot, then repeat the process above.
Also it is a good idea to format and partition the drive the way you want it. Once you see a letter for this drive right click on it (my computer) and you'll see format. that should do it , hope this helps you, please leave rating, thank you

My windows XP OS won't recognize my SimpleTech SimpleDrive Pininfarina 300GB External USB 2.0 Hard Drive

I found that often, external hard drives just don't have any active partitions and thus don't show up in Windows. Go into the control panel, administrative tools, computer management and then the disk manager and see if it has a partition. If it's just unallocated space, right click and make one.

Wd 250gb laptop HD only shows 118gb

In XP Start > Control Panel > Administrative tools > Computer manager then on the left click disk managment, you will see your 250gb drive as drive0 most likly with partition C and beside it you should see unallocated space, you can right click this unallocated space and format it, then right click again and click make partition active.

I have a Toshiba 1tb external hdd (px1396-3t01) and when i connect it to my laptop i see a blue flashing light..The disc is not recognised by the laptop! what can i do..???????

How old is your laptop? Are you running at least Windows XP Service Pack 3? If so, Right-click My Computer, then left-click Manage\Storage\Disc Management. Do you see your 1TB HDD listed? If so, is it described as Unallocated Space. If it says that it's Unallocated, then right-click in the black area and choose format, then follow the prompts from there. You should probably format it as NTFS. Be careful not to accidentally format a drive other than your 1TB HDD. If you don't see your drive listed in Disc Management then double check your connections. If all is connected well, then you should probably return it to wherever you bought it.

When I plug my wd 250 hd into my laptop (Win XP), my hd sounds funny (it makes like 3 "clank" noises, like when trying to read the drive). Win XP will recognize that a usb connection has been made but...

Those 'clank' noises are definitely not a good sign--the drive is failing and is trying to spin up but is unable to.

The only suggestion I have is to get pricing on sending it off to a company who can repair the hard drive and (hopefully) recover any data you have on it.

Sorry for the bad news...

Unable to format pen drive

XP has a stupid feature like that. If you did format with the XP style, try to do it manually.

My computer > Locate your usb pendrive >Rightclick and Format.

If this don't work, your pendrive might just be malfunctioning. Replace it if you can, or upgrade to external harddrive.

My External USB 250hard drive shows error Drive is not accessible

You most likely need to delete the partition on your external hard drive, then create a new one and format it again. You will lose the data on your external hard drive.
1. Go to the Control Panel, click on Administrative Tools, click on Computer Management, then Disk Management. (You will need Administrators rights to carry out the following tasks)
2. On the lower Right Panel select the External drive, this will be displayed as Disk 1, Right click on this drive (MAKE SURE YOU DON"T SELECT THE C: DRIVE which will be displayed as Disk 0)
and then Delete the partition.
3. This drive should then be Unallocated, Right Click on this drive and create a New Partition.
4. Then select Primary partition.
5. Check that the maxium disk size matches close to 240000(MB) you about 10+MB in the formating process
6. Click Assign the following drive letter (let the computer select this.
7. Chick Format the partition with the following settings
File System = NTFS
Allocatin unir size = Default
Volume label = "name of your choice eg. BACHUP DATA"
DON'T TICK Perform a quick format & Enable file & folder compression
8. Click Finish
