I had the same problem today, Hp wanted $629+tax to fix. With a little mechanical ablity anyone can fix this.
1. remove back covers
2. left-hand side is the video board
3. two white fuses
4. replace
this fixed mine and they only cost $1.50 each

The problem is the "Y-SUS" board. It is inside the set on the left side with several aluminum heat sinks, under the left side brace bar. You can order this board from Union Electronics at www.ued.com .Search for part number: TNPA3243AB-PA
It lists for about 115$

Mine has done this from day one, appears to be a resolution problem. All I do is go to a HD channel let it tune in and then go back the the SD channel and don't have to worry about it until next time the power has cycled.
SOURCE: Some troubleshooting help please.
The part that caused the fuse to blow is the hybrid that is mounted underneath the heatsink on the YSUS and ZSUS boards. The part used on these boards might be YPPD-J017C or YPPD-J018C, in about 90% of the time, replacing these hybrids fixes the plasmas with no video but good audio. Since VS and GND is shorted, that means that the hybrid has shorted internally. Most service techs would rather replace the entire YSUS or ZSUS boards since the hybrids are very difficult to remove.
Let me know if you require further assistance.

Thanks for the input. Any thoughts on what is causing the white hazy spots that appear lin different parts of the screen at random? I thought I saw a known power converter issue but I can't find that thread now. I was going to buy and install a power board but wanted to ask the experts first.
