It should run off the plug if its functional. This sounds like a motherboard problem though :(. You'll have to call HP and ask their support for troubleshooting before sending it in cause the motherboard in a laptop isn't something you can do yourself. Hope that helps!

I switch the power on power light comes on fan starts as if to boot then nothing, no screen and no keyboard lights

Does BIOS messages appear, or is the screen absolutely black?
If you see BIOS messages and then black screen, you should go to BIOS and choose your boot devices correctly. If there is no screen do the following tip:
1) Turn off the laptop.
2) remove the battery.
3) click and hold power button for about 30 seconds to discharge the circuit from motherboard.
4) then install the battery again
5) and click power button.

See what happens. In many cases it helps.
If there is still black screen, you should check your laptops RAM. In many cases removing and then installing back the RAM helps.

Computer does not boot, blue on light lites up but

Now when you say blue power light, what are the rest of the lights doing, does the hard drive light flash, does the fans turn on, does the hard drive make it's spinning noise, if so you may just have a bad LCD inverter which is very common and about a 40$ part. you can test this by trying to hook the laptop up to an external monitor and see what happens.

MY NOTEBOOK WILL NOT BOOT UP I HAVE A BLACK SCREEN THE BLUE LED LIGHT LIGHT UP BUT THATS IT I HEARD THERE WAS A RECALL ON SOME BATTERYS CAN THAT BE THE PROBLEM?

I have been successful with the following procedure for an HP laptop with a blank (black) screen
1. power off and remove battery
2. press start button for about 35-45 seconds
3. attach power cord (with battery still out)
4. start computer
5. reinstall battery
I have no idea why the problem occurs or why this seems to fix it but it does.

My HP DV1000 will not start.

You have a power issue. The board is not charging the system or the battery. If you know someone with a similar model, ask them if you can borrow their battery and see if your system boots with it. If it does, you may need a new adapter or the power board in the notebook is out. When you remove the battery and try it, there's enough juice to power it up for the moment, but not sustain it.

Hp 6000 notebook screen goes black..... blue control lights go on and off

if i'm reading this correctly, it sounds like it could be a motherboard/video issue. If that's the case then unfortunately you are probably going to need a new computer if it's out of warranty...

for now however, try shutting down the computer and removing all power (power cord, battery) for a few minutes, then plug it back in and try to boot.
