Question about Troy Bilt Tiller/Edger 26cc, Model No. 21at144r766

1 Answer

TB144 pull cord does not catch, pulls free--no start

I pulled on the cord to start the tiller, the cord did not engage. Nothing.
I have not taken it apart to check if spring is broken.

Yes exactly what i would do sounds like the springs are either worn or gummed up or just broken on the dog ears

How to remove clutch?

You have to pull the spark plug and fill the cylinder with some small rope then using a big pair of locking pliers you can loosen the clutch. There should be markings on the clutch as to the direction to unloosen.

remove the top cover. look inside while pulling rope briskly, you should see two dogs fly out and retract when the cord reaches its end. if not, check for dirt in the system and clean out. if no dogs, you will have to remove the system from the housing, be careful of the spring. check for any broken drive parts. also check flywheel cup for damage where the dogs come into contact with it.

MY TILLER HAS 4 ROUTATING BLADES IN THE FRONT,

under the housing where the pull cord is found is a latch type item with what they cal daugs, when you pull the cord the daugs fly out and catch into slots which will loch to start the engine, try some WD40 spray lube to free the daugs if this dosn't do the job you may end up getting a new housing or starter assembly

Troy-bilt 4-cycle Garden Cultivator TB144 pull cord not rewinding.

This type of pull starter design is very poor and fails often. Cheap parts and cheap design leads to poor performance and yet Troybuilt still doesn't give free parts or an upgraded design.
