Question about PC Desktops

Ram upgrade I was wondering how many MHz my desktop is because I wanted to get the ram up to 2 gigs. I had it up to 1.50 gigs with the stock ram and a K-byte DDR2 1024 pc 4200. I took out the stock ram and replaced it with one ultra DDR2 1024 pc2-4200 533MHz and the K-byte DDR2 1024 pc 4200. I can't seem to get 2 gigs because the system properties is saying there is only 1 gig. The max gigs this motherboard can handel is 2 gigs. The ram isn't defective because it will read 1 gig if I pull one or the other out of the slot. Maybe its because there not the same brand idk.

Re: Ram upgrade

You can upgrade it to 2 GB. For me it worked out pretty well because the computer (which also happens to be Acer Aspire L31) really reads 2 GB.

Probably because of the new memory. I installed both 1-GB modules in the same pack or brand. Yours probably be different brands. That might be the problem why it only reads 1 GB -- the computer can't read the other module (either the new or the previous-bought module).

Re: Ram upgrade

The Dell Optiplex 270 has dual channel RAM so it has to be installed in pairs. It has 4 slots for RAM. If you add a single 1 GB card the system will not recognize it - dual channel RAM needs to be installed in pairs which is why your original RAM was split into two modules. The pairs are slots 1-3 and 2-4 (you will see they have different color clips). Put the modules in slots 1 and 3.

In order to see how many MHz is your desktop, please right click on your "My computer" icon and select "Properties" from the menu.
It will open the system properties window. select the tab "general" and you will see how many MHz is your desktop.

If you have found this solution helpful please rate it as "solved", otherwise please ask here again.

Thank you :)

I have an ET1161-05- can it be upgraded to hold more memory and run faster?

Yes, your computer came with 2 gig's of ram in the form of 2 1gig modules of ddr2 ram.

There are 4 slots for memory all together, and each slot can hold 2 gig memory chips in each one, for a total of 8 gig's of ram!

That would cause a serious performance improvement for you.

It also came with a 160 gb hard drive, so if you want to, you can get as larger drive as well.

As far as processors, a dual core, AMD Athlon 64 X2 5600+ Brisbane 2.9GHz 2 x 512KB L2 Cache Socket AM2 65W processor will fit in with absolutely no bios updates required, so all you would have to do is take the old processor out, put the new one in, and turn the computer on.
It will recognize the new processor automatically, and will work right away!

This will have a significant performance boost, possibly doubling the total speed of your computer.

I hope this helps you out, and have a good day !

I am installing a 64-bit OS in my dell optiplex 960 desktop and i want to max out the memory on my PC.What is the maximum memory it can support and what is the best memory i can put in it and what can i...

You have 4 slots and each slot can support 4 gigs so you can have 16 gigs of ram total. I like corsair or Kingston ram the best. And when you are buying ram you want to look at three things. First is the type of ram which your type of ram is ddr2, second is ram speed which is measure in mhz you want the highest mhz you can get and last is latency, which you want the lowest latency you can get :) hope this helps. No you don't have to install a 64 bit OS. Only if you install over 3 gigs you MUST install a 64 bit operating system. 800MHZ is fine it will just back down to 667MHZ. your 32bit windows OS will see up to 3 gigs (minus graphics card memory). SO 2 gigs will work fine. Install one stick at a time and check in the OS and bios to make sure each stick works. I would say you possibly have a dead ram stick.

Dell dimension 2400

The front side bus speed of the processor is the limiting factor of your RAM speed.
The Processor has a 400 Mhz FSB, hnece your RAM runs at 266.
For RAM to run at 333 (PC 2700), you'll need a 533 FSB Processor.
