Sorry, sounds like a dead hard drive. If you can gain access to the drive, you should check for loose connections. Also, listen closely to the notebook as soon as you start it up - can you hear the drive spinning? Can you hear any loud clicking or grinding noises? Any odd sounds can also mean a dead or dying hard drive.
Good luck, and please rate this answer if you feel it has helped you!!

You can try to remove the hard drive and use an IDE to USB adapter to read any of the data off of it - sometimes even though a hard drive will not boot, it can still be mounted and read by another system. But I'll be 100% honest with you - it's a slim chance. Once the drive isn't recognized by the BIOS, there's not much hope. That generally means that the controller card on the HD itself is dying/dead, and a data recovery service (like datarecoverylabs.com) may be your only hope. But beware, those services can be wicked expensive...

Thanks for the suggestions! My computer has been having the same kind of issue, my friend said that it is most likely the hard drive that is dying. I am worried because I have a lot of important information saved on my computer and I would hate to just lose it all. My friend also suggested I try data recovery fromhttp://ttrdatarecovery.com. Is that really possible? How do they get the data from a dead computer?

Laptop is turned on and screen displays message "selected boot image did not authenticate. Press enter to continue. when you press enter it shuts the laptop off.

I am assuming you are installing Windows 8 as this message is related to Secure boot on Windows 8.

Secure Boot needs a System with UEFI supported BIOS and Secure Boot Enabled in the bios. Secure boot requires drivers to be signed and certified to run with Windows 8. Some of your hardware may not be supported because of this, and thus Windows will not boot, and shut down to prevent damage. See this Microsoft link for more details:

After it boots up and goes to the desktop the screen cuts off. the power button is still lit up but the screen is blank.

During boot up press function key F8 repeatedly until the windows boot menu appears. Select boot in safe mode. If this works make sure the correct video card is selected for the laptop. Go to your control panel click on system then select the hardware tab and click on the device manager. Select display adaptor and click on the plus symbol to expand the selection. Double click on the display adaptor and select the driver tab. Click roll back driver or uninstall the driver. Reboot your system normally. When windows prompts you to install the newly found device follow the instructions to install the graphics card driver.
If this does not work connect the laptop to an external monitor to see if you can see the video on the external monitor to find out if the graphics card is working.

It happens when no boot device is selected, the default is network boot first, you must select CDROM/DVDROM or HD as your first startup device.
