Changed transmission filter but don't know how to get oil back in to Craftsman Garden Tractor.

Don: A Craftsman model #917270662 uses 20w50 motor oil. A John Deere Tractor is filled with John Deere Low Viscosity HY-GARD® (J20D). A zero turn commercial mower may use 20w50 synthetic oil.

Hi, first check the oil. If it smells like fuel, change the oil. Secondly if oil smells ok, check the valve clearances and adjust if incorrect. Let me know if the oil smells like fuel and I will help with a fix to stop it happening again. Regards Phil.

check an see if the cabuerator is getting fuel and check make sure sparkplug is getting continous fire from the coil

You've changed the plugs have you checked the oil and air filter if not you need to because if not it might need changed and it may be low the rider my father gave me ran ruff and would die in 5th gear and I changed the oil and air filter now it stays going in all gears.So my suggestion to you is to to change the oil and air filter I am not a pro but I have had to keep my mowers going no help from anyone so I had to learn so if you don't agree with me check with a repairman.

there is no filter for those garden tractors just replace the oil at the regular intervels

Most likely you have a blown head gasket,check the fuel pump to see if oil is coming out of it or the line to it is fill with oil.If this is the case replace the headgasket.

IF IT HAS AN OIL FILTER IT WILL BE VISABLE FROM THE OUTSIDE OF THE ENGINE. IF THE ENGINE IS A SINGLE CYLINDER IT SHOULD NOT HAVE A FILTER TO THE BEST OF MY KNOLLAGE THEY PUT FILTERS ON THE TWIN CILINDERS

Being a reminder light it should reset itself after engine run hours increase from the programed reminder time

Does the motor even turn over. Have you checked the carb. for gunk or gas trash.

I also have a Craftsman tractor with the same problem. Sears repairman said it needed a new transmission and it would cost $1,400 to install. A new one is about $1,000. Anyway, if you remove the battery and the battery tray under the seat it will expose the transmission fill hole (hex). I opened the top and it looked empty. I had a bottle of 90 weight gear oil in my shop and filled the transmission to the top. I have not had any problems with it since. $4.00 bottle of oil verses a new tractor is worth a try.
