Need help installing drive belt on lawn tractor, lost manual
The mower will not go into forward, or reverse gear. It starts fine and the blade engages. Both belts appear to be in place, but loose. It stopped suddenly and a stick was pulled from the pulley area of the front deck.
Problem: Craftsman (mod 917.271654 17hp 42" cut) riding lawn tractor -- Forward and reverse gears disengaged while running. Blades still rotate. Trouble-shooting: Motion belt on pulleys above the deck blade pulleys is no longer mounted on pulleys and was shoved off by stick caught under the deck. Solution: Belts still in tact... place the tractor in lock position with the clutch brake pedal and the hand lever to the bottom right of the steering wheel. This will shorten the distance between the front and rear pulleys enabling you to be able to work the belt easier. Then, from underneath, go back to the rear of the tractor under the seat area and find the large pulley. Place the belt back on this pulley. Pull the slack up to the front pulleys. If the belt is extremely tight you may need a long, strong screw driver to assist, but be sure not to bend any parts. Following the belt diagram, place the belt back on the front pullies. The last pulley may be hard to get on. If you put the belt partially on and hand turn the pulley it usually follows onto the pulley. If not, use the screwdriver to assist.

This sounds like you have a bad bearing in one of the blade hubs or idler pulleys. Check by turning each pulley by hand and see if it turns easily. Go around all the pulleys and blade hubs(where the blades mount) and check for ruff spots while turning, and that they all turn freely. Do this without the blade engaged, this will allow them to turn somewhat freely.
2 things, one, the belt jumped track, broke, or melted in place, 2, the hydrostatic ****** is out of oil, you didn't say if it was hydro or not. I doubt that the gear box has gone bad, but I would put more blame on a belt or pulley. Check it out. Hope this helps.
on most riding lawn tractors you most first disengage the blades before going into reverse moving the tractor stop, put the tractor in a forward gear then re-engage the blades.
if this dose not help please contact me.
Thank you
It sounds like the ground drive belt is slipping, stretched badly or bound up under the mower by foreign debris/objects.According to the model, you have 2 or 3 belts on the mower. One is the ground drive belt and goes from a pulley on the bottom of the engine over the mower deck to a pulley on the rear transaxle. The other one or two belts are below it and driven off another pulley on the bottom of the engine and go to the blade deck. You will need to inspect it well. Here is a site where if you input your model number, like 917.567899....it will bring up ALL the parts and diagrams for your machine. Take a look and post back if needed.
Drive belt has snapped just go to a dealer with the broken belt to make sure U get the right belt then replace it.....maybe a friend can help you??? Pretty easy....
u should have two drive belts .go to nearest seller of mtd ,get owners manual .u can'not push foot speed lever to quicky up & down .start to learn how to use your mower slowly .there is no gear box for forward & reverse speed. but u have forward & reverse gearbox .talk to your dealer he will explain
a hydro uses a foot pedal on the right side , you push forward to go forward or rock the pedal rearward to go in reverse - a regular transmission has a shifter usually between your legs for reverse 1st 2nd or 3rd gear - you also said the blades wont engage . are they electric ( with a switch ) or do you manually move a lever .
lever FOR what??? can you tell me what the lever is? to adjust something, or what? Undercarriage? affecting a pulley? what?
