never use the garmin webupdater, it is unreliable. download the previous version 3.10 firmware from http://www.tramsoft.ch/gps/garmin_etrex-venture-hc-firmware-upgrades_en.html, extract to c:\garmin, plug in your gps via usb, hold the front button in the down position until update process completes, run the updater.exe program and let it complete. You will see an error message at the end of the update process, ignore and let the garmin reboot and it should work again after that.
Select the route page options button and press the Thumb Stick in to access the options menu.
Select "Restore Defaults" and then press in on the Thumb Stick to restore factory settings.
Hope this is of some help to you.
Good Luck!
I had the same problem as you with the unit switching off.
I found this link http://www.fixya.com/support/t2084694-gps_stay
I held down the joystick button to perform a "Bootlock"
I don't know if it will work for you.
I will be happy to help you with this. Unfortunnately, the Etrex Venture does not have an Electronic Compass, therefore you cannot calibrate it. What this means is that this unit will show the correct direction of travel as long as you are moving. The unit takes satellite reading every 1 seconds and compares it's location with the last location. This way it can read the direction of travel. It will not give correct readings unless you are moving.
I hope this helps.
I can only suggest that you insure that you have fresh batteries, and that they are installed properly. If you had batteries sitting in it, and they leaked, you might want to examine the contacts and make sure they are clean, and not corroded.
The Etrex are sealed and water-tight. Opening the unit will make them no longer able to resist water as well, and if there is anything wrong internally, it should be sent back for factory repair.
I can solve this by not solving it. First I tried reset the unit to default settings: hold down the power, page, and enter buttons at the same time, a message, "do you really wan to reset..." will appear. Select "yes." If the unit reboots, hurrah. If not, call tech support (1.800.800.1020). Get an RMA, send it back to them for repair. I had purchased mine over 30 days ago but less than 60: Amazon wouldn't replace it, Garmin will either replace or repair. If you want them to send a new unit while the old is in transit, just ask; they will charge and then credit a card once they have the old unit is in hand. Good luck.
Mine too. New batteries don't help. Neither does the USB cable.
