Honeywell smarfit set to OFF but radiators go on

I have a Honeywell Smartfit Central Heating Control and I set both Hot water and heating sliders to OFF, leaving the Settings slider as RUN PROGRAMME. The instructions say that the heating and hot water should remain off. I went away for a few days and when someone came to check my house, the radiators were on and the house was at about 29 degrees, even when my default setting is 21.5 degrees. My friend double checked the setting was OFF so she didn't know what else to do. Why would the radiators go on? Can someone help please??!! Many thanks, Laura.

This does not sound like a thermostat problem. I would be looking for a zone valve or circulator pump problem.

I have an old Honeywell ST499A/ST699B thermostat. It still works OK but when we have a power cut I have to re-programme everything. Presumably this is because the battery needs replacing. I cannot find a way of opening the control box to get into the unit to replace the battery and in any case I’m not sure if the battery is renewable?

You could possibly have an ignition problem. The controller will go into a lock-out condition if flame is not established. Turning the temperature control down and then back up may be serving to reset the control system so it tries again.
