Question about Craftsman 20 hp 42 in. Deck Lawn Tractor - CA Model

Craftsman 20.5 hp. auto trans.lawn tractor loss of drive power

Experiencing a loss of drive power on the transmission gets worse after running for a while. won't even pull me up any inclines.
Has new belt. Purged transmission, doesn't help. I'm fearing major tranny work. Makes kind of a whinny noise when put under a load, up hill ect. Unit used to fly up hills with loads of pulling/ pushing power.
Model # 917.270860

I hate to be a pain but, I also see #13 as a block cylinder assy. should this also be changed, and what other parts should be looked at for wear and changed? Is there a repair manual avlailable for this model either on line or in book form?

Thank you so much for you help

somehow did the little freewheel lever get pulled in the rear of the tractor to disengage transmission?..usually out is disengage and in is engaged. look around the back panel behind the rear axle for a small lever you can pull or push in.

The symptom that you are feeling is that your transmission is not fully engaging correctly. Basically you have a few different things to try depending on the trans that is on your machine. Drain the fluid and re-install new fluid, adjust your brake/clutch to make sure that you are fully disengaged and fully engaged when you release the pedal. If none of those 2 cure your issue then you are looking at a trans rebuild or replacement

My mower with auto. trans. won't go forward or backwards.

Here are a couple of things. Make sure the "neutral" lever for the transmission is in the engaged position. Also if anyone has removed a rear wheel recently, make sure the key is in the slot that locks the transmission axle to the wheel hub. If this is missing the tractor will not move. These are two simple things that need to be checked first. Hope this helps.

If you had included model no. I could have been more help but you probably will have to replace drive plate and or more in transmission. If you go to searspartsdirect.com and in model number type in, hopefully you will get parts breakdown of the transmission showing parts.

Check the fluid level in the transmission. If the fluid level is low, the trans will act as if it's slipping.

Transmission reverse and 1 st gear, 20 hp

transmission and shifting problems are tricky. from the limited information given, i'll go on assumptions - if this is a hydrostatic transmission, your brake is stuck, it will need to be adjusted - if it is a six speed, several factors come into play. if it will shift okay with the engine OFF, but not with it running, you have a belt problem. has the belt been replaced recently? is it the correct belt? is the belt routed correctly? if none of the above, check the belt guides to make sure that a stick or something hasn't poked up there and bent them. their purpose is to make the belt "blossom" away from the engine pulley so there is no tension on the belt at the transmission. if it won't shift with engine off, the shift shaft in the trans is probably rusted and sticking.

Automatic Transmission is squealing and bogs down when under load

Check the trans drive belt, most likely that, or a worn tension pulley. check easy things first. Try pulling back on foot pedal to give belt a bit more tension.
If the trans looks clean and no leeks start with the belt.
