The screen voltage to the picture tube is more than normal. Adjust it by the help of screen pot-meter integrated with Line Output Transformer. Visit the site named 'Electro-help' for more details. Check this link and select the site named above. View it in 'Flip card' option, which can be selected from the drop down box menu at the left top corner or the display window. I have a TV of this model. When I turn it on there is a white line that goes across the screen. There is no picture. After about a few minutes there is a distorted picture on the top half of the TV but the...

Vertical output sectionj inside the circuit board of your RCA tv is damaged. From your description I understands that there is some loose soldering occured in that section. Just open your TV, locate the vertical output section and resolder most of the soldering points in that section by applying a little more solder. The proble of your TV sholuld be rectified. To locate the vertical section, follow the four wires going from deflection yoke, ie, coil fitted on the neck of the picture tube. There will be four oof them, out of which two of them will be thin relative to the other two. Usually colur coded as blue and yellow. Colour code should always not be the same as described, and it can be changed to set by set. Any way these four wires reach to the main board and socketed there. Follow the track on the print side of the board, where the above said two thin wires are connected, and you will reach to the vertical output section.
If this does not help, replace the IC used in that section with same type and number. If you want any more assistance, please inform me by Fixya. OK.

The screen colapsed into a thin line running from the top center

The deflection circuit is most likley bad. You need a service center to repair . If you can TEST THE BIG FAT TRANSISTORS AND CHANGE OUT IF BAD, THEN YOU CAN FIX IT. They are usually on a big metal finned heatsink ...

Black Lines in picture

You may have a bad cable, bad connection, interference or all of the above. Try wiggling the cable and see if that helps. You could also move any other electronics away from the cable (if possible) and/or change out the cable (cable tv/antenna cable) and see if that clears it up. However, if the line does not appear to have any information in it as though it was just missing then your problem is a hardware issue that will require a trip to tv repair shop.

Picture is now a thin horizontal line

now only visible in a thin horizontal line. first of all you reduce brightness to monimum. it just to protect your tv from crt demage. your problem is in horizontal output section as you have mentioned that week or so ago the right and left bottom edges of the picture began to move in like a sideways triangle filled with black so this sympton is due to hor. section problem. your flyback transformer or horizontal output might be defective. but remember check for power supply is ok from surge protector hope this will help.

Thin horizonal line in middle on dark screen

The several thin white lines at the top of the screen is the warning that the vertical output IC is not getting the boost voltage it needs to run correctly. The IC cannot operate for long like that and shorts out inside, which is when the vertical collapses altogether and you get the thin white line through the center of the screen. The good news for your son is that he had nothing to do with that, and it has nothing to do with the cable F connector. The set needs to be serviced by an experienced tech who will restore the boost supply and replace the vertical output IC, and when I do that I charge $75 but techs in your area will vary, so be sure to ask around.

If your tv has a picture tube, your problem is in it. If you have only one line now,the vertical circuit is not working. You could have jarred something loose around the picture tube.Maybe a yoke lead ???
