Question about NetGear CG814M Wireless Cable Modem Gateway Router

CG814WGv4 cable modem from Optus Australia, all 4 ethernet ports not wokring since thunderstorm in January 2009, can ethernet ports be checked if they are still ok, can it be fixed by SW reload, purch

Since a thunderstorm in January all 4 ethernet ports of our Optus CG814WGv3 wireless router don't work anymore. We still can use the USB connection and the wirless port also still works but a lower speed than the ethernet ports. Is thera ny possibilty toi check if the ethernet ports are still ok, is there the possibility of a SW reload or do we have to replace the modem by a new one. Are there any other possibilties to ourhcase a new cable modem rather than buying it from Optus ? thansk for some useful tips rgds Eric Wrobel Sandringham, Victoria, AUS

Hi i had the same problem with an optus modem thunderstorm ruined my ethernet port. i had to replace the modem from optus and all it cost me was $40(put on my next bill) cheaper then buying another modem. i was told i couldnt buy a modem from another source because apparently they have unique codes on them...hmmm don't know about that, but thats what i was told.

Did your Internet Service Provider "rent" or "loan" or "sell" the modem to you?

If it is "rent" or "loan", then they will exchange it, if they want to keep you as a PAYING customer.
If they don't, return it to them, and switch to a different Internet Service Provider.

If it is "sell", then they should have included a 1-year or 2-year or 3-year "warranty" on it.
Exercise the WARRANTY to get it repaired/replaced.

The Cable modem must be disconnected from the computer. You cannot use USB and Ethernet at the same time.

1. Turn off power to the Cable Modem and the Netgear Router. Do the same with the computer.
2. Connect an ethernet cable from the modem to the router's WAN (Internet) port.
3. Connect another ethernet cable from one of the remaining 4 LAN ports on the router to the computer's ethernet port.

4. Now power on the Cable Modem ONLY. Wait for the modem to sync up with your service provider
5. After about 2-5 minutes power up the router and wait about 1-2 minutes.
6. Now power on your PC.

Check and see if you have internet access. If not you may have to uninstall any cable modem software related to USB connection. if this is the case, then you may have to repeat steps 4-6.

Since most cable internet providers do not use proprietary connection settings, your internet connection should be up and running without changing any settings in the router or modem.

If this does not resolve your issues, we can continue to work with you.

Telephone wall-plate <---- 4-strand telephone-cord ---> telephone-port in modem

AC power from wall-plate to modem.

LAN port #1 <--- Ethernet cable --> network-port on desktop/laptop computer #1.
LAN port #2 <--- Ethernet cable --> network-port on desktop/laptop computer #2.
LAN port #3 <--- Ethernet cable --> network-port on desktop/laptop computer #3.
LAN port #4 <--- Ethernet cable --> network-port on desktop/laptop computer #4.

Configure the router's wireless adapter:
* set a SSID
* set an encryption-level, e.g., 'WPA'
* set a network password

Use the SSID/password to configure your wireless devices (iPod Touch, iPad, XBOX 360, etc.)

Modem light is blank on motorola wr850g, how do i fix?


If the modem light is not turning ON,
1) check if the modem is ON
2) check if the ethernet connection is properly made
3) check if the port on the modem is working, confirm it by connecting it straight to the computer.
4) check if the ethernet cable is working fine.
5) Then try power cycling the router. Unplug the power cable and connect in back after 20-30 secs.
6) Then try pressing and holding the reset for 20 secs.
7) Finally connect a single ethernet cable from any LAN port to WAN port and check if the modem light is ON.
Ultimately, if even after this step, if the light doesn't turn up, either the modem LED would have gone bad or the WAN part of the router would have gone bad.

There is no connection to the other pc


3 ethernet cables 1 ADSL modem and 1 hub is needed to network computers together.
1. connect telephone cable to modem and switch it on. 2. one end of an ethernet cable is connected to the modem . consider this master ethernet cable. connect the other end of this to the master hub port. 3.now connect pc and any hub port with another ethernet cable(ec) say ec1 4. likewise ec2 to another pc .
try this out to get net in both pc's

A router is not a modem.

Your existing modem is a modem. It better have a coaxial cable inlet and an Ethernet cable outlet. The wireless router ought to have 5 ethernet ports, 1 WAN and 4 LAN.

Do you have a ethernet checking device? (Lowes and Home Depot both have several devices - price in the $50 to $75 range.

You could replace the two ether net cables and see what happens.

the prob may b with the ethernet adapter on the computer or the ethernet port on the modem or the ethernet cable.....
to check ethernetadaptor  ping 127.0.0.1
to check the ethernet port on the modem...if u plugin the cable u should have a light lid up on the modem ..
to check the ethernet cable  try with an alt cable which is proved to be working

Hi,

First : check your cables if its plugged in securely on each each
port
Second: Try to change their ends
Third : Try to replace your Ethernet cable.

If your router is connected to a modem try to isolate the problem by connecting your router directly to your computer and check f light would turn on. IF YES then thers something wrong with your modem, check it out.
