Question about Heating & Cooling

1 Answer

Last night my husband turned off our window unit because it had gotten cold in the house, we got up this morning and went to turn the unit on and it won't come on at all. The light on the plug is on and when I click the reset button it lights up everything on the front panel but it turns itself back off. We always have to replace window units every year and this is quite costly and am getting tired of this. We have 3 other units that are older than this one which is only a year old but we also paid double the price for this one hoping it would last longer but here we are again. I sure hope someone can help me with this. thanks so much. Christy

so is the capacitor in the window where the unit turns on? and how hard is it to replace it? would it require soldering?

Must be a shorted capacitor.

In most equipment the capacitor is mounted out of the weather behind the controls. here is a typically failed capacitor that has swollen and shorted internally:

No soldiering is needed. You simply remove the clips.

I moved a fisher and paykel upside down fridge freezer to a new house, I turned it on a half hour after it was in my new home but it has not gotten down to a cold enough temp, if I turned it on too so

It is possible damage will result. Your fridge's compressor motor is suspended inside the compressor housing on three or four springs. These springs are designed to hold the motor load in a vertical position. Transporting a fridge on it's side can stretch or break these springs which can cause a shudder stop condition (the fridge makes a shuddering banging noise everytime the compressor stops and sometimes when it starts).

It's a good idea to let a fridge sit for a bit anytime it is moved. Over night won't hurt but an hour is more than enough time.

the internet consensus seems to be that you should limit the amount of time the unit is not upright. And as stated above, leave it upright at least overnight before starting it. Apparently damage can arise from mixing of lubricant and coolant, so damage is more likely in an older unit with worn seals.

Red light goes on and off

Needs the button put back into place. Look under the cabinet to see if there is an access panel below the switch, would go for all external controls. There would be a chassis with all the controls mounted to it.
Pull the plug before doing any repairs.
Look to see what it would look like in it's normal position. Something has moved out of place that holds the switch to the panel. Very tedious if you have to remove the whole housing.

There is ice forming on the evaporator coils. This is either from a low freon charge or a leak in the seals or windows and doors. Could also be that the drains are not working and water is building up and freezing

Turn off machine at night?

Turning off an espresso machine at night is a bad idea. There are many gaskets and seal's that mate to different types of metal surfaces all of which contract and expand at different rates when hot or cold. If you keep doing this you will eventually break the seals.

We have had a coleman central air system for 5 yrs. It stopped blowing cold air into the house about a week ago. You can still here it running but no air is coming out. my husband replaced the fuses and...

Ice is an indication that the refrigerant is not flashing off correctly in the evaporator coil. In most cases you can simply turn the unit off (until it completely thaws inside and out) and replace the filter. Make sure that all the vents in the house are open as well. If this does not work then you will need a technician to come out and check the refrigerant levels in the system. Ice can indicate that the refrigerant is low. I hope this helps.

Starting by itself

Time for a service call. Should not turn on by itself at any cause. Circuit board is my guess. May be cheaper/easier to get new microwave. My first one lasted about 15 yrs--and the circuit board (touchpad) died. Bought new microwave oven.
