Check for 2 or 1 push tabs on the side of the spool that might onlock it so it can be turned too replace string

You may have a broken drive shaft. Some are braided and flexable and used on curved shaft units. The solid shaft is used on most straight shaft units. Remove the string head and pull the shaft out to look at the ends to see if they are broken or stripped. George

How do you refill the string on the homelite electric, straigh shaft, 13 in Trimmer?

Is the sting the cutting line at the bottom of the trimmer? If it is pull the spool out. At the bottom of the spool there is an arrow pointing in the direction that the line should be wound. When you first put in the line be sure to place the cutting line in the grove (V shape) and then when you put enough line around the spool. Thread the end of the line thru the hole on the side of the spool. Slide the spool over the shaft of the trimmer and it will click in. When the line is short just tap the spool lightly on the grass and it will feed out more line.
Good Luck.

How do you take the spool off the Homelite gas grass trimmer?

Push in on the spool & turn counter clockwise. This works for most trimmers. Careful though, the center spring may pop off with the spool. (I wouldn't do it on a hill)

Installing new line on my string grass trimmer

Cut two separate pieces of string, about 7 ft. each.

Stick the end of the line in the hole on the inside of spool.

Wind clockwise onto spool, putting the line that is closest to the ground on first.

Once you have winded this piece on, lock the last 4 inches of line through the slits on spool.

Repeat process for second piece of line, locking the last 4 inches in slot opposite the other locked in piece.

Put the spool on the trimmer, feeding the end of lines through either hole on trimmer.

Before you push the spool all the way on, pull the strings out of the locked position.

Cant get the spool off homelite trimmer

Unscrew the bump-knob and the rest pulls off. If it won't unscrew you could always cut it off and buy a new one from ALM Manufacturing 01423 797208

Cant get spool off Turning it anti clockwise. It makes a click noise, but wont undo.

Do not know which model you have but if curved shaft probably a Right Hand Thread which you should loosen by turning CCW. If a straight shaft trimmer probably a Left Hand thread. Many times the LH button will be Red in color. Could be the head of the screw is slipping in the button. If so remove the metal cover plate on the button to get to the bolt head. You will need to change the button out if this is the problem. The RH thread button is PN 308042002 and the LH thread button is PN 308042003.
