Hard drive crashed

And my boss put a new hard drive in our Compaq computer. We got to disk for the microsoft software with the computer we only have a recovery disk. We can not get the recovery disk to read with the new hard drive. Is this possible to do? I know that the restore disk has the option to restore the computer back to being just like it had come from the manufacturer. I just can't get this disk to read!!!!!

Can anyone help?

Hi, a restore disk uses data that is stored in a hidden partition on the original drive so when you replaced the hard drive with a new one, it will not have this hidden partition. You will need to either buy a new operating system, or contact your manufacturer/supplier to see what they can do, they may format the new drive with a hidden partition like your original depending how 'nice' they are. Only other thing you can do, is get hold of an original operating system disk from somewhere if you have a COA, (certificate of authenticity) on the computer, contact Microsoft and they should be able to replace your COA serial key with a new one that will work.
