Question about Dell Dimension 8200 PC Desktop

No power How do I check the power switch on the front of the computer? I tried a different power supply still won't start. There is one led light on the motherboard that is lit but when you push the power switch nothing happens.

    I have the same problem, I tried a different power supply and still nothing exect the green led light on the MB. I dismantled the casing in order to get to the power button, only to discover it is not just a standard power button, but a circuit board and ribbon type..I don't even know how to check this power button to see if that is the problem. And if it is, how in the world do you take it off to replace it, assuming I can find another one. I noticed this seems to be a common problem with the 8200 model from the posts here on fixya...could use some help with this guys and gals...SpiralOut...

Hey man check u r all power cable connection properly..

fi u can not do it ....then i would like to suggest u to contact u r computer dealer emiciatly or u can harm u r computer..

i think u have a major problem man...

The front of your computer is the Front Panel

The area of contact pins on the motherboard, that the Main wires from the Front Panel go to; is the Front Panel header.

What you are asking for is a Front Panel header pinout.

I do not have the exact Front Panel header pinout, for your motherboard.
Tell you what I do have though..........

Looking at the Front Panel header on the Ebay link, for the Winfast 760m02-GX-6LRS; the Front Panel header looks to be below the CMOS battery, and close to the Bottom edge of the motherboard.

(Motherboard installed in computer case)

Black rectangular strip of plastic, with contact pins sticking up.
Also looks to be a GENERAL set-up for all Winfast motherboards.
(COULD be wrong here)

Go to the third photo down. Here you see the Front Panel wires, connected to the Front Panel header; on the motherboard.
(Below round CMOS battery)

Note that the contact pin on the Bottom row, and all the way to the Right; is NOT being used.
(I'm using a 26 inch HDTV as my primary monitor, so it may be easier for me to see)

Now look at this Front Panel header pinout, for another Winfast motherboard,

PWRLED is for the Power On LED (Light)
PWRSW stands for Power On switch
HD-LED stands for the HarDDrive activity LED (Light)
RESET stands for a Reset switch, IF USED.

Note where it has a Positive ( + ) sign, next to the pin for the PWRLED.
This is the pin the + wire from the Power On LED connects to.
It is the SAME for every LED that connects to the Front Panel header.

Let's number the contact pins, to make the explanation easier;
Starting at the Left side, Top row; going towards the Right;
Pins 2, 4, 6 and 8. There is NO Pin 10.

Starting on the Left side, Bottom row; going towards the Right;
Pins 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9.

Pin 2 is for the Positive wire.
Pin 1 is for the Positive wire
If the LED's are dim, (PWRLED, and HDD LED), OR; the LED's do not light up, switch the wires around.

(Pin 9 is N/C.........Not Connected. This is probably a 5 Volt test point, that was used by the factory)

There is a method you can use though, and find out what the individual contact pins are, in the Front Panel header;

Use an LED with two wires

Computer (Power Supply) plugged into power, go along the top row, and touch two pins at a time, with the two wires of the LED.

Example; Pins 2 and 4, as shown in the pinout.
Did the Power Supply come on?
No?

Go to the next two pins. Try again.
When the Power Supply comes on, you naturally know that is the two contact pins; for the Power On switch.
DO NOT touch them again. In fact connect the Power On switch wires.

Power Supply on, computer running;
Now go back along again;
1) LED light blinks?
You have the HarDDrive activity LED, contact pins.
2) LED light stays on?
You have the Power On LED, contact pins.
3) Computer restarts?
Those are the Reset switch, contact pins.

4) Nothing happens?
May be contact pins for a speaker, or contact pins that are not used.
(Speaker is for hearing BIOS Beep Codes.
You have a Piezo buzzer, to the Left of the CMOS battery; for that)

Post back in a Comment, as to the results.

If possible, I would like to ask upon you; to post the Front Panel header pinout; when you find what it is.

That way when a person in the future also has this same problem; the solution will be posted on the internet, for them to find.

Won't turn on


Check the power lead and the mains outlet.
If these are OK and when you press the power switch on the computer and the power LED does not light up then most likely the switch mode power supply is faulty.
Switch mode power supplies contains dangerous mains voltage and I do not recommend a DIY repair. Just purchase a new switch mode power supply, make sure the wattage of the power supply is equal or greater than the old power supply.

Epox ep-8npa sli user manual barcode label says 5a 000901821. d33221 is also stamped on board


I don't have access to a motherboard manual, (User Manual), for the Epox EP-8NPA SLI motherboard, Wayne. Sorry.
The only info I have is the basic info on the Specifications,

If this problem is in direct relation to the Front Panel header on the motherboard, it shouldn't be too hard for you to find the Power On switch connections.

(Plastic front of computer is the Front Panel.
Area of pins on the motherboard, that the wires from the Front Panel connect to, is the Front Panel header. { FP_1 )

Processor to the top, Ram Memory to the right, and the long white PCI slots to the bottom; the Front Panel header is the long black rectangular block of pins, at the very bottom right.

Pins go across the Top row, and across the Bottom row, of this rectangular block of pins.
Connections made will be from a pin on the top row, to a pin on the bottom row.

It only takes two contact pins for the Power On switch.
(The Power On switch is an ATX power on switch. It is located inside the plastic Power On button assembly.
Here is a basic example of an ATX power on switch,

Touch two pins (One top row, one bottom row), with an LED light.
Take the two wires of the LED light, and use them to touch the two contact pins.

Contact made is no longer than 2 seconds.

If you find the right two contact pins, the Power Supply should turn on.
If not, no harm, no foul.

For example, you have touched the two pins for the HarDDrive activity LED light.
Or pins for the Power On LED light.
You won't hurt anything using a small LED light for a jumper.

Once you find which contact pins turn the Power Supply on, therefore turning the computer on, you can experiment, and see what the other pins are for.

A) Power On LED light
B) HarDDrive activity LED light. and so on.

{ IF, the Power Supply does Not turn on, you have a bad Power Supply}

If this is not the problem simply state so in a Comment. We'll go on to see if we can find the solution.

Power problem .... tried 3 different power supply cords...the green light on the rear blinking meaning???? pushed switch on front ...held in.....no response only moved from 1 office to another....always...


was it dropped..?? the indicator light should b solid not flashing.. If you held the power switch in for several min an nothing Try plugging the cord directly into the wall. Do not use power strips as they may have failed.Toggle the voltage regulator switch from 115V to 230V then back again. If you are in North America, this switch must be on 115V. you may have a loose connection in the machine Lastly, you may need to go inside the case and confirm the thin wires running from the front power and reset switches are connected to the motherboard., to check be sure u are grounded an check all connections inside the computer... If the LED is still flashing, the power supply is probably bad.

Pavillion does not start up push power on and nothing happens blinking light on back of power supply


Power supply light on or flashesPerform the following steps, in order, until power is restored or it is determined that there is a hardware failure: CAUTION: This product contains components that are easily damaged by ElectroStatic Discharge (ESD). To reduce the chance of ESD damage, work over a non-carpeted floor, use a static dissipative work surface (like a conductive foam pad), and wear an ESD wrist strap that is connected to a grounded surface, like the metal frame of a PC.
  1. Disconnect everything from the computer, including the power cord.
  2. With the power cord disconnected , press the power button on the front of the computer for five seconds.Plug in the power cord and test to see if the computer can turn on. If not, continue using these steps.
    NOTE: If the power supply fan makes an inconsistent grinding sound or stops and starts erratically, replace the power supply
  3. With the power cord removed, flip the red voltage selector switch to the opposite position. Wait about five seconds, and then switch the red voltage selector switch back to its original location. Ensure that the voltage selector switch is on the correct setting, 115V for North America.Performing this step ensures that the voltage switch is engaged and set correctly for your country/region. Figure 4: Voltage selector switchc00517964.jpgPlug in the power cord and test to see if the computer can turn on. If not, continue using these steps.
  4. Plug a lamp into the same outlet to see if the wall outlet has power. Try the computer in a different outlet in order to eliminate the outlet as a possible source of the issue. Test both to see if the wall outlets have power.
  5. Remove all extension cords, power strips, surge protectors and any converters that remove ground. Plug the power cable directly to the wall outlet. Test for power. If this fixes the issue, find the device that is causing the issue and do not use it.
    NOTE: If you find the device that was causing the problem was a surge protector, resetting a breaker or fuse on the surge protector may fix the issue.
  6. Remove all attached devices except for keyboard, mouse, and monitor.
  7. Remove any internal component that was recently added, such as video card, memory, CD, DVD, and hard drives. An added device may take more power than the power supply is rated for. If the problem goes away when the component is removed, the only option is to upgrade the power supply to power supply with a higher wattage rating.
  8. Check the power switch:
    1. With the power cord disconnected, press the power button on the front of the PC. The button should release easily and not stick in the socket.
      • If the button sticks, it should be replaced or serviced.
      • If the power button does not stick and appears to be functioning, continue using these steps.
    2. With the power cord disconnected, remove the case or side panel.
    3. Follow the wires from the power button on the front of the computer to their connection on the motherboard.
    4. Look at the power switch cables connected to the motherboard. If the cable has become disconnected, connect the power switch cable connector to the connector on the motherboard. Figure 5: Power switch connector on Motherboardc00517968.jpg
    5. Replace the side panel, plug in the power cord and test to see if the computer can turn on. If not, continue using these steps.
  9. Find the defective part:
    1. With the power cord disconnected, remove the case or side panel.
    2. Disconnect all power cable connectors from their connectors on the motherboard and from the back of internal devices (the back of drives). Make sure to label or remember where each cable connects for future reference. Figure 6: Example of common power connectionsc00540428.jpg
    3. Replace the side panel, plug in the power cord, and examine the light on the back of the power supply:
      • If the LED is on solid and is not flashing, the power supply is probably good and the problem is most likely caused by a defective component (processor, memory, PCI card) or a defective motherboard. Have the computer serviced, or remove the components and replace them, one at a time, to find and replace the defective component.
      • If the LED is still flashing (it should not flash with all connectors removed), plug the power cable into a different power outlet that is known to be good. If the LED still flashes, the power supply should be replaced.
      • If the LED light is now off, plug the power cable into a different power outlet that is known to be good. If the LED stays off, the power supply should be replaced.

      NOTE: If an electrical storm or power surge has recently occurred, then it is more likely that the power supply, the modem, or motherboard is damaged and requires replacement. If the power supply was damaged due to power outage or storm, this may not be covered under the "act of nature" policy in the warranty statement. Refer to the warranty statement that came with your computer for more information.

Pc will not come on no power , have checked power outlet, as well as power cable, to no avail ...........still will not come on


Have you checked the toggle switch on the back of the power supply? Make sure it is turned to the correct voltage (110 in the US). Still no power? Check the connection on the motherboard. Make sure the power supply lead from the front panel switch to the motherboard is connected. Then check all power connections to the motherboard. Secure or correct as needed. (follow the motherboard manual's diagram as to where each lead should go)

No power - not responding to on button


If there are on LED lights on in the front panel then either the power cord is faulty or the switch mode power supply is faulty.
Try a different power cord to determine if it is faulty.
Can you smell a burnt electrical smell from the fan grill at the switch mode power supply?
The only way to test if the switch mode power supply is to remove it from the desktop computer and take it to your friendly computer shop to get it tested.
If you do have electronic knowledge I would advise you not to attempt to test and try to repair this power supply.
If the switch mode power supply is faulty, then replace the switch mode power supply with another unit with the same or more wattage.

Front panel Ac Switch failing to start computer.


Try these steps.
If Power supply light does not turn on (or no power supply LED)
Perform the following steps, in order, until power is restored or it is determined that there is a hardware failure:

9. Use a vacuum cleaner to remove the build-up of dust from the power supply fan vent holes. Make sure that the PC is turned off and that the power cord is plugged into a grounded outlet. Only use the end of the vacuum hose near the outside of the fan entrance.
Plug in the power cord and test to see if the computer can turn on. If not, continue using these steps.
10. If all of the above steps have been tried and the power supply light remains off, use the steps in the next section, use the next section Power supply light comes on or flashes , to reseat the cables and check the power switch connector.

u check almost all ....
also check with u r power buton of front panel of pc if this button is get short then it is possible .....please disconnect switch from board & just short with any metal ....if u r pc is not geting shut down please replace rower switch ...
