Match the colors of the wires to the plug always, the fourth wire you can just leave open as it will not make a difference for your particular instance.

I have a 3 prong to change to a 4 prong cord on my dryer

The following link explains how to correctly install a 220VAC appliance cord to your dryer:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r3575913-installing_a_220_vac_appliance_cord

Read through the instructions provided and let me know if you have questions. This advice is how to convert from a 3 prong to a 4 prong appliance cord. You simply match the corresponding colors of the wires on the cord you intend to attach to the matching colors at the terminal block on the back of the dryer. If the wires are not color coded at the terminal block, the outer two wires (left and right) are the HOT leads, the center wire is the Neutral. Make sure the neutral ad ground wires remain independent of each other in a 4 wire configuration. The green wire should be terminated on a ground lug on the equipment cabinet while the neutral is terminated at the terminal block.

Let me know if you require further assistance. I hope this help you.

Change 4 plug out and put in 3 prong plugs it runs but no heat

The main difference between the 4-prong and 3-prong configuration is how the ground and neutral wires are connected at the terminal block.

The color codes are as follows:

RED - HOT (120 VAC)
BLACK - HOT (120 VAC)
WHITE - NEUTRAL (0 VAC)
GREEN - GROUND

You simply match the corresponding colors with the wires present at the terminal block on the back of the dryer. In a 3-wire configuration, however, neutral and ground are connected together. This is done by connecting the ground wire from the equipment cabinet to the neutral wire at the terminal block.

In a 4-wire configuration these two wires are INDEPENDENT of each other and are not connected.

Please note that in homes built after the year 2000 it is REQUIRED to have a 4-wire configuration to be within the National Electrical Code.

If the wires at the terminal block are not color coded, Red and Black will be connected to the outer two terminals (left and right) of the terminal block, while neutral will be connected to the center terminal.

If you have any questions, please let me know. I hope this helps you.

Amana dryer, changing out the electrical plug from 3 to 4 prong

For example; Green wire goes to green screw on machine. White in the middle, red on left, black on right. (observed small color coded wires connecting in back-ground as well.)

In general, each color should match. Meaning, white with white.

Yes, it does matter which color wires are connected. If connected wrong, you may injure yourself and/or destroy the dryer. The following link explains how to convert your dryer plug:

there should be instructions on the cord that you purchased. if not here it is, on your dryer, the 3 prongs are L1-N-L2.. and the green is a ground L1 line 1, L2 line 2, and N nuetral. L1 and L2 dont make a diff. as long as the whie(nuetral) is in middle terminal and the green screws to hte ground screw
