Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I am trying to burn data from my 20GB Toshiba MK2004GAL hard drive (from an iRiver MP3 years ago) to my MACBOOK with OSX. It is connected by USB, to a USB2.0 to IDE&SATA Cable adapter, to Addionics adapter (AAT18IDE25), to the drive. The red USB light is on and the drive is running. The problem is downloading the music files. The Disk Utility program opened, and it verified my drive, but it does not allow me to pull any info off of it. The following info was provided by Disk Utility: Write Status: Read/Write.-- S.M.A.R.T. Status: Not Supported. -- Partition Map Scheme: Unformatted. So it seems to be a compatibility issue. I know the easy answer is that it is incompatible, but I believe there must be a way to get the data from this drive to my computer. Can you help me out?

The problem you have is compatibility, you just cant do this, if you want the information you will have to connect your drive to a windows system to retrieve the devise data.

Bought an mp3 (used) fitted with this hdd. Capacity appears to be 15gb but all I read says 20GB? Wheres the other 5?

It depends what "units" you use when you measure.

For example, it could be that the
'20GB' is 20 * 1000 * 1000 * 1000, while
'18GB' is 18.6 * 1024 * 1024 * 1024,
rounded-down to 2 decimal places,
e.g., '18.6' is 3 decimal places, while '18.0' is 2 decimal places.

This is a "trick" by Toshiba (and all other disk-manufacturers) to make their disk-drives more "attractive".

Iriver h10 not always shutting down properly. Sometimes have to reset

sounds like your power on switch may have an issue or your hard drive is severely fragmented or is going south. Hook up the H10 20gb to your pc via the UMS emergency connection trick (see here) . Try defragging your hard drive first..
Good luck!

I need system files for my iRiver H10 20GB MP3 player

hard drive is probably bad -- common problem. cheapest solution is tobuy as-is h10 from ebay with a working hard drive (perhaps it has atouchpad problem), open the unit up and replace the drive.

See this forum for info on how to open the player with a torx tool and a plastic pry unit. forum

Planb - sell unit on ebay in as-is condition and use money toward a topnotch 20gb refurb unit for about $30-50 from sellers like metromania

Iriver H320

Apparently most of the Mp3 players use a common garden variety Lap Top Hard Drive like a Toshiba etc. I have a Friend who replaced his in a Creative Zen. So Either take it a a reputable Laptop repair firm or simply pull the back off and check it out yourself. I haven't down this yet because I am still trying to Back up the contents of my H320 before it fails completely. When you pull the back off it should have a small hard drive just clipped into it using a wiring connection similar to a Laptop. Find the numbering and get a compatible replacement. The you may need to download a Firmware update as an exe file from IRiver and put this in the bas directory of the H320 and run it. THis sets up the necessary software. You may even be able to put in a larger hard drive 40 or 60 gb as they are all the same price depending on your budget. Let me know how it goes as I will be doing the same job shortly.

I need to recover the data from my PMP-120 (hard drive is removed)

That's because it's a Toshiba 1.8" zif drive.

Adaptors/ enclosures are available on the web.

If the drive is still working once you've taken your data off then sell it. Used 20Gb 1.8" drives are going for about £30+

IRiver H10

Sounds like you either have a bad hard drive or some of the song files are corrupted.Have you gone into the "Emergency Connection" mode to reformat the player? Rest the player; if it's a 20gb stick a paper clip in the reset hole, on a 5 or 6gb remove and replace the battery. Then connect the player to the PC. Hold the enter button down when you turn it on, it should come on and read "emergency connection" at the top within a black band.
You must go to the iriver.com web site and download the firmware updater for your player. Her is the link; http://www.iriveramerica.com/support/hd/. Then select either the 5-6 or 20gb firmware. Run the firmware program while the player is in the "Emergency Connection" mode. You can also get the firmware upgrade info from iriver. That should solve your problems and in addition you will be getting the latest firmware.
