If the fan is not running then most likely the defrost stat has failed but you should also check the fan for continuity if you have continuity the fan should be ok you can find a defrost stat on parts advantage.com

Why is my freezer blowing hot air and now does never frost up

There is a heating element in the freezer that goes on for 10-15 min. a couple times a day to defrost the cooling coils in the freezer. The air inside may feel warm but this doesn't stay on long enough to defrost the frozen food.

We bought our frig exactly 6 years ago (to the date!) and suddenly the frig part is cool, but not cold, while the freezer section stay cold and ice is frozen.

Check your freezer section ! Is the coil frozen over ? If so it may have a burnt out defrost element or a bad defrost timer. When the freezer coil freezes over cold air is restricted to the refrigerator section.

You may notice frost on the panel that covers the evaporator coil in the freezer. This is a tell tale sign of the coil being frozen up blocking air flow.
Inside the freezer compartment is where the evaporator coil is located. It is behind a cover that allows air to enter the bottom and then forced out the top by a small fan. You should be able to feel the air flow coming out the top. If no air flow the evaporator coil may be frozen and needs to be defrosted. There is a heater at the bottom of the coils which aids in this and may need to be replaced. A couple of screws usually holds the cover in place. Remove the cover and place a small fan in the door to aid in melting the ice. Do not apply heat of any kind ie hot water, blow dryer etc because this can over pressurize the coils and damage the system. The heater may look like a small light bulb. It can be checked with an ohm meter for continuity to see if it needs to be replaced.

your evaporator coil in the rear area behind the freezer back panel is frozen over with ice and the coil can no longer deliver cold air due to ice blocking the air flow from the evaporator fan, remove this rear panel, defrost it with a hair dryer, check the defrost heating coil for continuity, they go bad regularly,if not the heater coil under the evaporator coil,it may be the defrost timer in the refrigerator section of the unit that powers the defrost coil that needs replacement

Hi, fan may have stuck, but you could have a defrost problem, check defrost heater, thermodisc(defrost thermostat) and defrost timer. or excessive moisture, if your days are hot, or if you put hot foods in ref. could result in excessive ice build up. you can manually defrost it, by unpluging ref. for couple of hrs, until all ice melted. then restart. you make get excessive water on floor. be prepared.

Refrigerator won't get cold, top freezer is o.k.

There may be a fan and duct arrangement that blows cold air from the freezer to the refrigerator compartment.  That fan is controlled by the refrigerator thermostat.  If the door was open for a long time the fan might have been blowing cold air continuously and ice may have built up and blocked the duct preventing air flow to the refrigerator.  Check to see if you can hear the fan running.   You may have to press the switch that controls the light since that also sometimes turns the fan off when the door is open.  If you can hear the fan, check if there is any air flowing out of the vent holes at the inside back of the fridge compartment.  No air flow=no cooling.  If no air flow, unplug the refrigerator for a couple of hours to see if ice in duct will melt then start up and check for fan operation and cooling.  Frozen food in freezer will be OK if you keep it closed while refrigerator is unplugged.

Motor runs, freezer defrosting and fridge won't cool

If you have frozen coil at the back of the freezer section, then the defrost thermostat is usually failing. Allow the fridge to defrost completely overnight. If the fridge restarts cooling immediately after defrost, then the problem was the defrost system. In that case the fridge will stop cooling again in a couple of days, as soon as the evaporator coils restart freezing and the condenser goes under stress with the whole cooling system loosing efficiency.

Freezer working fine, but Refrigerator no longer cooling

Sounds like there's an airflow problem to the top section. Things that cause no cold air to the top fridge section are... frozen up coils completely blocking most of air flow (defrost cycle not working), evap fan not working to blow air up to fridge, air control dampers in fridge closed or not working properly, or frozen air ducts supply/return. Pull the whole drawer out the bottom and take the rear inside back off to expose the coils. If they are frozen solid the defrost t-stat or defrost timer could be bad (heat element not usually bad). If there is a nice white frost all over evenly then that's OK. Check that the fan is running when the compressor is running to blow the air up and that there are no blocked air ducts, etc. If all that is good, check if you can feel good air flow from the upper vents with the lower door closed (that shows there is no blockage and the fan is running).

Fridg not cold

Ahhhh, the classic symptom of a frozen coil/air return duct. You'll have to pull the back panel off the freezer wall to view the coils. The are likely a block of ice causing the air channels on the sides to be frozen, thus blocking air flow. You may need a defrost t-stat or a defrost timer. If the defrost cycle isn't working then you will get a freeze up eventually. The only other reason is if the freezer door was left open slightly overnight letting in moist air. Let us know what you find.
